Bayern Munich Confirms Next Summer Departure as Squad Planning Intensifies
Bayern Munich’s sporting director Max Eberl has confirmed that Nicolas Jackson will not remain with the club beyond the current season, confirming the next departure in the club’s summer planning process. The confirmation came during Eberl’s appearance on ZDF’s sports studio on Saturday evening, where he addressed the club’s roster decisions for the upcoming campaign.
According to Eberl, the decision regarding Jackson stems from the forward’s limited playing time under the loan agreement with Chelsea. Eberl stated that the club does not need to activate the purchase option in Jackson’s loan contract since the striker has not met the required appearance thresholds outlined in the agreement.
“We have players with whom we will not extend contracts: Leon Goretzka or Raphaël Guerreiro. We have a player with Nicolas Jackson, whose option we do not need to pull because he does not reach the games. And where it also leads to the fact that we will not pull the option,” Eberl said in the ZDF interview, as reported by t-online.
The confirmation of Jackson’s impending departure adds to the growing list of players set to abandon Bayern Munich this summer. Earlier confirmations had already established that midfielder Leon Goretzka and defender Raphaël Guerreiro will be leaving the club when their contracts expire at the end of the season.
Goretzka, who has been with Bayern since 2018, is departing after six seasons with the Bundesliga champions. Guerreiro, who joined the club in 2023 on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund, is also set to leave after his contract expires this summer.
The defensive line is also expected to observe changes, with reports indicating that Hiroki Ito and Min-jae Kim are being considered as potential sale candidates. Ito, who joined Bayern from VfB Stuttgart in 2024 for €23.5 million, has struggled with injuries during his time in Munich and has not secured a regular starting position when fully fit.
Kim, the South Korean international who arrived from Napoli in 2023, has also been linked with potential moves to English clubs, according to transfer market reports. The potential departure of both defensive players would require Bayern to seek significant reinforcements in the backline for the upcoming season.
The summer transfer period is shaping up to be one of the most active in recent Bayern Munich history, with multiple established players expected to depart. The club has already secured the Bundesliga title this season and is competing in the DFB-Pokal final and Champions League semifinals against Paris Saint-Germain.
Bayern’s upcoming Champions League semifinal second leg against Paris Saint-Germain is scheduled for Tuesday evening, with the first leg having ended in a 0-3 deficit for the German champions. The club will look to overturn the deficit in the return leg at the Allianz Arena.
As Bayern Munich continues its pursuit of domestic and European success this season, the club’s management is simultaneously laying the groundwork for next season’s squad. The confirmation of Jackson’s departure, alongside the established departures of Goretzka and Guerreiro, signals a period of significant transition for the Bundesliga giants.
The club’s approach to these transitions appears methodical, with Eberl emphasizing that decisions are based on contractual obligations and performance metrics rather than emotional considerations. This pragmatic approach to squad management has been characteristic of Bayern’s recent transfer strategies under the current leadership.
