Arthur Fils will face Rafael Jodar in the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell after the 19-year-old Spaniard defeated Cameron Norrie in straight sets on Friday.
Jodar, ranked outside the top 100, earned his second consecutive win over the British No. 24 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory that lasted 69 minutes. The result extended his winning streak to eight matches and secured his place in the last four of the ATP 500 event.
The victory marks Jodar’s third Top 30 win of the season, having previously defeated Learner Tien at the Next Gen ATP Finals and Norrie in the first round of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in February.
According to Infosys ATP Stats, Jodar struck 21 winners to Norrie’s eight and won 75 percent of his first-serve points (24/32) in the match. Despite being broken twice early in the opening set, the teenager recovered through relentless aggression to seize control.
“Cameron is always a tough opponent,” Jodar said after the match. “I think I handled the vital moments and the pressure moments in the match very well. I am very happy with my performance today, but I realize I have to maintain going. I have to keep pushing. There are still more matches to arrive.”
At 19 years classic, Jodar becomes just the fifth Spanish teenager in the Open Era to reach the Barcelona semi-finals, following in the footsteps of Alex Corretja (1994), Carlos Moya (1996), Rafael Nadal (2005, 2006) and Carlos Alcaraz (2022, 2023).
His opponent in the semi-finals, Arthur Fils, advanced to the last four after his quarter-final match against Lorenzo Musetti was not played due to scheduling adjustments. Fils, the French No. 1 and recent Monte-Carlo Masters champion, will now face the in-form Jodar for a place in the final.
The Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, held annually at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona, is one of the premier clay-court events on the ATP Tour. The 2026 edition continues to serve as a key preparatory tournament ahead of the European clay season and the French Open.
Jodar’s run has drawn attention for its resemblance to the early breakthroughs of Nadal and Alcaraz, both of whom won multiple titles in Barcelona before achieving global stardom. The Spaniard’s composure under pressure and ability to elevate his performance in critical moments have been cited as key factors in his success.
With the semi-final set for Saturday, Fils will appear to continue his strong 2026 campaign against a rising opponent who has now defeated two Top 30 players in consecutive weeks. The winner will advance to the final, where they will face either the winner of the other semi-final or receive a walkover depending on the draw.
As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on how the young Spaniard handles the step up in competition against a player of Fils’ caliber. For now, Jodar’s focus remains on the immediate challenge.
