WAC’s New Coach Bounce Fails to Launch as Relegation Pressure Mounts
The long-awaited “coach effect” failed to materialize for Wolfsberger AC on Saturday. In the debut of new manager Thomas Silberberger, the Carinthian side could only manage a 0-0 draw against SV Ried, extending a dismal run of eleven competitive matches without a victory.
For a club currently fighting for its survival in the Austrian Bundesliga, a scoreless stalemate at home is a bitter pill to swallow. While the result avoided a loss, it did little to alleviate the mounting pressure on a team sitting in penultimate place.
A Tactical Shift and a Stalemate
Silberberger wasted no time implementing changes to the WAC setup. He shifted the defensive line to a three-center-back system and recalled captain Dominik Baumgartner to the starting lineup. Baumgartner had previously been relegated to the bench under former coach Ismail Atalan.
The match itself was a gritty affair, described as a struggle defined by “fight and cramp” rather than fluid football. SV Ried controlled much of the early proceedings and nearly took the lead in the 32nd minute. Antonio Van Wyk found himself with a golden opportunity from a few meters out, but WAC goalkeeper Nikolas Polster produced a critical save, tipping the ball onto the crossbar.
While the hosts showed more intent in front of goal following the halftime break, they were unable to find the breakthrough. The result leaves WAC still searching for their first win in over two months.
The Relegation Race Tightens
The draw is made even more precarious by events elsewhere in the league. Blau-Weiß Linz, currently at the bottom of the table, ignited their own fight for survival with a dominant 5-0 demolition of WSG Tirol.
That result has drastically shifted the dynamics at the bottom of the standings. Blau-Weiß Linz now trails Wolfsberger AC by only two points, turning the relegation battle into a high-stakes sprint.
Meanwhile, at the top of the qualification group, SCR Altach claimed the lead with a 1-0 home win over GAK, moving ahead of SV Ried on goal difference as the two teams are now level on points. GAK remains two points behind the leading duo.
The Revolving Door in Wolfsberg
Thomas Silberberger is not the first attempt by WAC to stabilize a sinking ship this year. He becomes the fourth coach employed by the club in the current football season, following the departure of Ismail Atalan.
The frequency of managerial changes highlights the desperation within the organization. Silberberger arrives with the specific task of “getting the coals out of the fire,” but his first outing suggests that the tactical and psychological hurdles facing the squad are deep-rooted.
For a global audience following the Bundesliga, this pattern of rapid coaching turnover is a stark reminder of the volatility facing clubs in the relegation zone, where a single result can be the difference between stability and a crisis.
Critical Checkpoints Ahead
The immediate future for Wolfsberger AC holds the most direct confrontation possible. The club faces two high-pressure matches against their immediate rivals in the descent fight.
- Saturday: A direct duel against Blau-Weiß Linz in Wolfsberg.
- Tuesday: A return fixture against Blau-Weiß Linz in Linz.
These two matches will likely define the trajectory of WAC’s season. With only two points separating the bottom two sides, these head-to-head encounters are effectively six-point games that could decide who stays up and who goes down.
