The series began on Saturday, April 11, at 14:00 local time, with the first leg hosted at the St. Galler Halle Tal der Demut. For over six hours across the weekend, the matches between BC Trogen-Speicher and Yverdon-les-Bains remained tightly contested, contrasting sharply with the other semifinal where Lausanne dominated Zürich with a 7-1 and 2-0 sweep.

Because the badminton playoff format does not include a third-place play-off match, the players from Appenzell Ausserrhoden were awarded bronze medals on Sunday, April 12, presented by association representatives.

Claude Heiniger, President of BC Trogen-Speicher, acknowledged the sting of the loss but emphasized the pride the organization feels. “Of course, when you are in the semifinals, you wish to win,” Heiniger said, adding that neither the club nor the team should be disappointed in their overall performance.

Roster Shifts and Tactical Gambles

The weekend was marked by significant adjustments to the Trogen-Speicher lineup. The team faced a hurdle on Saturday when their number two player, Imka Putrama Arlin, was unavailable due to a club commitment with Mulhouse.

This absence forced the coaching staff to pivot, leading to a historic moment for the squad. For the first time in the NLA, husband and wife Franziska and Patrick Volkmann stepped in to compete in the mixed doubles match.

The most poignant narrative of the weekend, however, was the return of player-coach Agung Ruhanda to singles competition after a lengthy hiatus. In a clash described as “old against young,” the 43-year-old Ruhanda faced off against 19-year-old Nolan Chanthakesone. While Ruhanda brought veteran experience to the court, the youth and energy of Chanthakesone ultimately prevailed.

Despite the team result, individual brilliance was on display. Azkya Ruhanda emerged as a key force for the Ausserrhoder side, securing two singles victories over the course of the weekend.
