Alexander Zverev Cruises Into BMW Open Quarterfinals After Victory Over Gabriel Diallo

Zverev Rolls Past Diallo in BMW Open Second Round

MUNICH, Germany — Alexander Zverev advanced to the quarterfinals of the BMW Open by defeating Gabriel Diallo 6-1, 6-2 on Thursday in Munich. The top-seeded German secured his place in the last eight with a dominant performance that lasted just 1 hour and 13 minutes.

Zverev’s victory sets up a quarterfinal clash against Francisco Cerundolo, continuing their rivalry that now stands at 4-3 in Zverev’s favor overall. The match took place at the BMW Open by Bitpanda, an ATP 500 event held on the clay courts of Munich.

The German star served exceptionally well, winning 83% of points behind his first serve (25/30) and converting 63% of his break point opportunities (5/8). Zverev accumulated 59 total points compared to Diallo’s 34, showcasing his efficiency throughout the match.

Zverev’s win added €32,710 to his prize money earnings for the tournament, bringing his total to €70,165 after this victory. Should he win his next match against Cerundolo, he would earn an additional €67,175, putting his potential total at €137,340 for the event.

This victory marks Zverev’s continued success at the BMW Open, where he has previously won the title in 2017, 2018 and 2025. The German player has now won 113 tour-level quarter-finals in his career, placing him fourth among active players in this category.

Zverev acknowledged Diallo’s physical struggles during the match, noting that the Canadian appeared to be dealing with a back issue that affected his serve in the second set. “I think he had some issues with the back and was not serving fully in the second set,” Zverev said in his on-court interview following the victory.

The German star also mentioned his recent experience watching Bayern Munich’s Champions League quarterfinal victory over Real Madrid, stating that he attended the match with his family and took his children to meet the players afterward.

Zverev will now face Francisco Cerundolo in the quarterfinals, seeking to avenge his losses to the Argentine on clay courts. Cerundolo holds a 3-0 head-to-head advantage against Zverev on clay surfaces, having defeated him in Madrid and Buenos Aires.

The BMW Open continues in Munich with several other notable matches underway, including Denis Shapovalov and Alex Molcan also advancing to the quarterfinals on the same day.
