2026 Asian Judo Championships Opening Ceremony Held in Ordos, China

Asian Judo Championships Open in Ordos with China Securing Three Bronze Medals on Day One

The 2026 Asian Judo Championships officially opened on April 16 in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, marking the second time China has hosted the continent’s premier judo event since its inception in 1966. Organized by the Asian Judo Union, the championships brought together 288 athletes from 21 nations and regions, alongside 77 officials, for competition at the Ordos Municipal Sports Development Center’s sports hall.

The opening ceremony featured cultural performances including the dance piece “Welcome to Ordos,” flag bearers representing the International Judo Federation, Asian Judo Union, Chinese Judo Association and the event organizers, and an athlete’s oath led by Chinese judoka Bu Hebilige, who spoke on behalf of all competitors. Chinese Judo Association officials and Asian Judo Union President Obied Anzi were present at the ceremony, which was covered by Xinhua News Agency photographer Bei He.

Competition commenced immediately after the opening ceremony, with finals held in the men’s 60kg and 66kg divisions and women’s 48kg and 52kg divisions. Mongolian judoka Jamsran Anudari won gold in the women’s 48kg category, whereas her compatriot Myagmarsuren Nandin-Erdene claimed victory in the women’s 52kg division. Bahrain’s Poltoratskii Ruslan took gold in the men’s 60kg event, and Tajikistan’s Emomali Nurali secured the men’s 66kg title.

For the host nation, China’s Hui Xinran and Zhuang Wenna shared bronze in the women’s 48kg category, and Xue Ziyang earned bronze in the men’s 66kg division. These three medals marked China’s opening-day haul at the championships, which organizers described as a vital platform for showcasing Asia’s judo development and fostering athlete exchange across the continent.

The Asian Judo Championships have been held biennially since 1966, evolving into Asia’s highest-level judo competition. Hosting the event for the second time underscores China’s growing role in the sport’s regional development, with the Ordos venue providing a modern facility for elite competition.

As the championships progress, athletes will compete across additional weight categories over the coming days. Fans can follow updates through official channels of the Asian Judo Union and the Chinese Judo Association for results, schedules, and highlights from the ongoing competition in Ordos.
