2024 China Baseball League: Professional Baseball Debuts in Weihai

WEIHAI, China — The 2024 China Baseball League officially tipped off on April 27 at Weihai Blue Whale Baseball Stadium in the city’s Lingang Economic and Technological Development Zone, marking the first time a professional baseball game has been held in Weihai.

The opening ceremony featured remarks from Chinese Baseball Federation standing committee member and treasurer Tian Yuan, Weihai Municipal Sports Bureau Party Secretary and Director Jiang Jinjun, and Lingang District Party Working Committee member and Administrative Committee Vice Mayor Xu Chunlei. The event was co-organized by the State General Administration of Sports’ Handball, Baseball and Softball Management Center and the Chinese Baseball Federation, with support from provincial sports bureaus in Shandong, Sichuan, Jiangsu, and Tianjin.

Nine top-tier professional clubs fielded nearly 300 athletes for the opening series: Beijing Tigers, Tianjin Lions, Shanghai Golden Eagles, Jiangsu Jumma, Guangdong Leopards, Sichuan Jiaolong, Shandong Blue Whale, Henan War Wolves, and a Fujian representative team. The games ran through May 7, extending the initial schedule announced in January which had set the Weihai leg to conclude on May 5.

Lingang District has invested in baseball infrastructure since 2016, constructing the Blue Whale Stadium to international standards. The venue features intercontinental-level lighting, LED screens, and line-array sound systems, enabling night games and fourth-tier television broadcasts — the first such facility in Shandong Province.

Beyond the field, the district provides comprehensive support services including the Blue Whale Apartments (housing over 1,000 personnel), a dining hall serving 1,300 simultaneously, and auxiliary facilities like convenience stores, theaters, gyms, media centers, and training halls to support team operations.

The opening match saw Shandong Blue Whale take on Jiangsu Jumma in a contest described by local officials as displaying the athletes’ “vitality, youth, and resilience.” Cultural performances preceded the game, including a youth baseball exercise routine from Weilai Road Elementary School titled “Love for Baseball” and a spring-themed dance piece “Mountains and Seas on the Road” by Lingang District cultural volunteers.

Lingang has hosted over 80 branded baseball events since 2016, welcoming more than 450 teams from over 10 countries and regions. These include the Asian Youth Baseball Championship, China Baseball Championship, and the Lingang Cup, establishing the district as a recurring hub for international and domestic competition.

The league season continues beyond Weihai, with subsequent stops scheduled in Chengdu, Wuxi, and Tianjin, running through August 2 according to the official competition plan released by the Chinese Baseball Federation.
