Youth Activities & Community Projects: Fun-Filled School Break with PAJ!

The winter break with the PAJ (Point actions jeunes) in Seysses, France, is consistently described as a period filled with joy, friendship, dedication, and a strong sense of togetherness for the young people involved. Beyond simply providing recreational activities, the PAJ fosters a sense of civic responsibility and community engagement among its participants.

The program extends far beyond traditional sports and games. While activities like creative workshops, multi-sport sessions, cooking classes, photography, board games, badminton, futsal, American football, and competitive games are offered, a significant focus is placed on community projects. A particularly visible example is the decoration of Seysses’ roundabouts for various events. From Valentine’s Day and Easter to Christmas and Halloween, the young participants brainstorm and create vibrant displays, often utilizing recycled materials – a strong ecological statement.

Preparation for Mardi Gras, including the creation of “Monsieur Carnaval” in collaboration with the local association Les Puces seyssoises, is another key activity. The PAJ participants likewise contribute to the upkeep of their town by organizing litter collection drives, painting bollards, and completing painting projects along pathways leading to the Paul-Langevin elementary school restaurant and gymnasium.

The program also emphasizes intergenerational connections. A recent outing to the Lombrives Cave in Ariège, complete with a picnic inside the cave and a forest hike between Alliat and Quiet, provided a unique opportunity for young people to connect with nature and culture. This blend of cultural exploration and physical activity highlights the PAJ’s commitment to well-rounded experiences.

The PAJ isn’t limited to school breaks. Throughout the year, every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon, a diverse range of activities are available, encompassing sports, outings, cooking workshops, arts and crafts, and more, providing consistent opportunities for young people to engage in positive activities.

The program is staffed by animators from the Seysses sports department, and approximately 80 adolescents and children participated during the recent two-week winter break, with many continuing to attend the after-school PAJ sessions. This consistent engagement speaks to the program’s value within the community.

The PAJ’s approach isn’t just about filling time; it’s about cultivating responsible citizens and fostering a sense of belonging. The combination of recreational activities, creative expression, and community service provides a holistic experience that benefits both the individual participants and the town of Seysses. The emphasis on using recycled materials for decorations, for example, subtly reinforces environmental awareness and sustainable practices.

Looking ahead, the PAJ will continue its regular Wednesday and Saturday afternoon programs, offering a consistent outlet for young people in Seysses. The next scheduled activities and events will be announced through the Seysses municipal channels, providing ongoing opportunities for participation and community involvement.
