Despite not improving on his initial jump – recording 16.91m, a pass, and 17.08m, followed by a foul – Diaz’s first-round effort was sufficient to secure the gold. The championships also saw a stellar performance from Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh in the women’s high jump. She secured gold with a clearance of 2.01 meters on her first attempt, solidifying her return to form after a third-place finish at the Tokyo World Championships. Australia’s Nicola Olyslagers, Serbia’s Angelina Topic, and Ukraine’s Yuliia Levchenko all cleared 1.99 meters but were unable to match Mahuchikh’s winning height.
Mixed Results for Italy in Sprint Events
Italy’s hopes in the men’s 60-meter sprint were dashed as both Samuele Ceccarelli and Filippo Randazzo failed to advance to the final. Ceccarelli came closest, equaling his season best of 6.61 seconds for a fifth-place finish in his semifinal heat, competing against a strong field including Trayvon Bromell (6.42) and Kishane Thompson (6.47). Randazzo finished eighth in his semifinal.
Promising Performances in Middle Distance
There was brighter news for Italy in the middle-distance events. Eloisa Coiro qualified for the final of the women’s 800 meters, winning her heat in 1:59.87 despite battling a fever. Federico Riva also impressed in the men’s 1500 meters, winning his heat and positioning himself as a contender for a medal in Sunday’s final. Pietro Arese, however, did not advance from his heat.
Ludovica Cavalli secured a historic spot in the women’s 1500-meter final, becoming the first Italian woman to reach this stage in the 21-edition history of the World Indoor Championships. She qualified with a strong finish, securing her position alongside France’s Agathe Guillemot.
Diaz Sets Sights on World Record
Following his victory, Diaz expressed his ambition to continue pushing his limits. “We are a winning Italy, and the blue color brings me luck,” Diaz said, referencing the Italian national team color. “The second gold is better than the first. it wasn’t easy to confirm the title, but I did it. Now, I want to try to break the world record.”
