BASEL, Switzerland – Wong Ling Ching’s promising run at the 2026 Swiss Open concluded in the second round on Thursday, but the Malaysian shuttler is taking away valuable lessons from her experience against Indonesia’s top seed, Putri Kusuma Wardani. Despite falling 21-17, 21-15 at the Jakobsville Hall in Basel, the 22-year-old demonstrated significant progress, according to national team leadership.
The match against world No. 6 Putri Kusuma Wardani proved to be a significant step forward for Ling Ching, who is continuing her development on the international stage. National singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen was pleased with her performance, noting she largely played to her current level. “She performed well and largely played to her current level,” Jonassen said. “There are still things for her to learn, especially when tactical changes occur during a match and how they affect her play. More experience will help in such situations.”
Jonassen highlighted a key shift in Ling Ching’s mindset. “She is now capable of challenging opponents at this level, which is a incredibly positive sign,” he added, indicating she’s no longer intimidated when facing elite players. This newfound confidence is a crucial element in her continued growth.
The Swiss Open provided a challenging environment for the Malaysian contingent, with several representatives exiting in the second round. Though, Aaron Tai-Kang Khai Xing offered a bright spot, securing a quarter-final berth in men’s doubles. They upset Indonesia’s third seeds, Leo Rolly and Bagas Maulana, in a thrilling three-game match, winning 21-12, 21-23, 21-16. The pair will now face Denmark’s seventh-seeded duo, Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard, for a place in the semi-finals.
Other Malaysian results included a loss for the men’s doubles team of Nur Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong, who fell to Thailand’s Peeratchai Sukphun and Pakkapon Teeraratsakul 21-18, 19-21, 21-15. In men’s singles, Justin Hoh was defeated by India’s Tharun Mannepalli 21-14, 21-14. Jimmy Wong and Lai Pei Jing similarly lost in mixed doubles, falling to Indonesia’s Jafar Hidayatullah and Felisha Pasaribu 21-8, 21-11.
Ling Ching’s journey continues next week at the Orleans Masters, where she is scheduled to face American Zhang Beiwen in the opening round.
