PULLY, Switzerland – The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) has released an updated WBSC Men’s Baseball World Ranking, reflecting the shifting landscape of international baseball following the recent World Baseball Classic. The tournament, organized by Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association, has resulted in significant movement among the top five teams.
Japan remains at the top of the world rankings with 6,337 points, a slight decrease from the 6,676 points recorded on December 31, 2025. Chinese Taipei (5,302), the United States (4,357) and South Korea (4,239) follow closely behind. Still, the biggest change comes from the newly crowned world champion, Venezuela, which jumps into the top five with 3,992 points – a substantial increase from their previous 3,653. This victory narrows the gap with Japan to 2,345 points (previously 3,023) and with fourth-ranked South Korea to just 247 points (previously 539).
The WBSC World Ranking serves as a key indicator of international performance, measuring results from the past four years in global and continental competitions across all age groups, from Under-12 to Under-23 and the senior level. As outlined in Article 4.1.17 of the WBSC Statutes, the system is designed to objectively evaluate and promote the performance of national teams worldwide.
This latest update incorporates the results of the 2026 World Baseball Classic, replacing the points awarded in the 2023 edition. The tournament assigns points to all participating teams, with the champions receiving a maximum of 1,000 points – plus a bonus of 100 points – ensuring a balanced distribution based on final standings.
Venezuela’s championship run earned them 1,150 points, followed by the United States (953), the Dominican Republic (905), and Italy (858), reflecting the competitive spirit displayed throughout the tournament.
Further down the rankings, Puerto Rico (3,298) climbs to sixth place, surpassing Mexico (3,227), which now sits at seventh. Australia has made the most significant move within the top 10, rising two positions to ninth (2,425), ahead of the Netherlands (2,358). The Dominican Republic likewise gains ground, moving to 11th (2,334) and swapping places with Cuba, which falls to 12th (2,291).
The shifts continue within the top 20, underscoring the increasing competitiveness of international baseball. Nicaragua advances to 15th position, while the Czech Republic (1,255) occupies 16th. Germany (996) rises to 17th, followed by China (894), Canada (886), and Great Britain (880), completing a tightly contested group.
A total of 85 men’s baseball programs across the five Olympic continents are now featured in the WBSC World Ranking, highlighting the global reach of the sport.
