Vsetín, Czech Republic – HC Vsetín is conducting a thorough post-mortem after a disappointing quarterfinal exit from the Czech Second Highest Competition, falling to Litoměřice 3-1 in the best-of-five series. The loss, coming after eight years without reaching the semifinals, has prompted a frank assessment of the club’s performance, financial situation, and future direction.
A press conference held Wednesday at the historic Lapač arena included team officials and journalists, where the issues plaguing Vsetín this season were openly discussed. The conversation spanned financial concerns and the long-term viability of the club, alongside a critical evaluation of the team’s on-ice performance.
“The word ‘hunger’ is being used a lot right now, as is the team’s overall mindset,” said head coach Luboš Jenáček. “I think Litoměřice had more hunger, more energy. The reasons for our early playoff exit are beginning to become clear, thanks to exit interviews with our players.”
The season was marked by significant instability in the coaching staff. Luboš Rob initially departed as an assistant coach, replaced by Ondřej Němec and Michal Broš. Later, head coach Daniel Babka was relieved of his duties, with Jenáček taking the helm in December. Jenáček returned to Valašsko after five years working with youth programs at Zlín and Slavia.
“After years with Jirka Weintritt (former coach, led Vsetín from the 2022/23 season), a new coach arrived. We believed it was the right path,” explained sports manager Pavel Hanák. “We stood by that decision and had an agreement with management to allow time for the new system to take hold. There were many changes.”
Even as the struggles of Vsetín were a central focus, the difficulties faced by rival Zlín also garnered attention. However, even a fourth-place finish in the regular season was considered a setback for Vsetín. Despite an improvement in performance following Jenáček’s arrival, the team failed to translate that success to the playoffs. “After Luboš Jenáček joined, the game stabilized, results improved in the new year, and we went into the end of the season with a better style of play. Unfortunately, we couldn’t confirm that in the playoffs,” Hanák said.
“In those 22 games, we were second in the standings. Unfortunately, we couldn’t carry that over into the playoffs. It’s frustrating, and I feel terrible for our partners and the fans who support the hockey club. I absolutely didn’t expect us to end the season like this. I’m grappling with it, and I’m not sleeping well; it’s weighing on me,” Jenáček added.
Hanák acknowledged the necessitate for significant roster changes. “For me, a major overhaul is definitely needed. We need to refresh and rejuvenate the squad.”
Specific details regarding changes to the player roster, coaching staff, or club management remain unclear, with further announcements expected in the coming days. “I believe we will analyze this well. If we find a way to be better, I would be happy to continue in this role, but the decision rests with the club’s management,” Jenáček stated.
Exit interviews with players are currently underway, with all parties attempting to understand the reasons behind the team’s early playoff exit. Forward Pavel Klhůfek offered a candid perspective, stating, “It’s not just about the sporting side, but also about the fact that it supports us and our families. Every player wants to win, but also wants to earn as much money as possible. And by finishing so early, we’ve lost certain income.”
“Personally, I was most upset by not knowing what I’m going to do now. I wasn’t planning on this, I was in shock. The disappointment is still with me,” Klhůfek concluded, reflecting the sentiments of many players who underperformed in the playoffs.
The situation at Vsetín underscores the challenges faced by ambitious teams striving for success in the competitive Czech hockey landscape. The club now faces critical decisions regarding its future, with the hope of returning to contention in the years to approach.
The club will continue evaluating its options and is expected to provide further updates on its plans in the coming weeks. Fans can follow official updates on the HC Vsetín website: https://www.hc-vsetin.cz/
