Voborníková Continues Strong Form with Fifth-Place Finish in Kontiolahti Mass Start
Kontiolahti, Finland – Tereza Voborníková of the Czech Republic continued her impressive run of form, finishing fifth in the women’s mass start race at the Biathlon World Cup in Kontiolahti on Sunday. The result marks the third consecutive top-five finish for the 25-year-traditional, building on her fourth-place showing in Friday’s individual event and a strong performance at the recent Olympic Games in Anterselva.
Just 15.2 seconds separated Voborníková from the winner, France’s Justine Braisaz-Bouchet, a testament to her growing consistency on the World Cup circuit. While she narrowly missed out on a podium spot, finishing just three-tenths of a second behind Germany’s Marlene Fichtner, Voborníková held off Olympic champion Océane Michelon of France to secure her second-best World Cup result to date. She also recorded the sixth-fastest overall course time.
Clean Shooting Start, Late-Race Push
Competing as the sole Czech representative in the mass start, Voborníková began the race with a flawless prone shooting stage. This extended her streak of perfect shooting to five consecutive stages, dating back to the individual race earlier in the week. This is a significant achievement in biathlon, where consistent accuracy is paramount.
The race wasn’t without its challenges. A missed target during the second prone shooting stage dropped her to 13th position, and another miss on her first standing shot further hampered her progress. However, Voborníková demonstrated resilience, remaining calm and focused throughout the competition.
She found her stride during the final standing stage, hitting all five targets and entering the final lap in ninth place. A blistering final lap – the fastest of the entire field – propelled her forward, ultimately securing a well-deserved fifth-place finish.
Braisaz-Bouchet Claims Victory, Czech Team Shows Depth
Justine Braisaz-Bouchet secured her second victory of the season, adding to her win in the mass start event at the World Cup in Nove Mesto na Morave earlier this season. She had only one penalty during the first shooting stage, maintaining near-perfect accuracy for the remainder of the race. Elvira Öberg of Sweden finished second, followed by Hanna Magnusson, also of Sweden, rounding out the podium.
The Czech team as a whole demonstrated strong performance in Kontiolahti. In the men’s 4×7.5km relay, the Czech team of Tomáš Mikyska, Mikuláš Karlík, Petr Hák, and Michal Krčmář finished ninth. While they faced 14 reloads and one penalty loop (Karlík), their performance highlighted the growing depth within the Czech biathlon program.
The Norwegian team dominated the men’s relay, securing both the victory and the small crystal globe for winning the discipline. France finished second, and Sweden took third.
World Cup Standings Update
