Lynbrook Badminton Defeats Monta Vista 25-5

CUPERTINO, Calif. – The Monta Vista High School Varsity Badminton team faced a tough challenge on Thursday, March 19, falling to Lynbrook High School with a final score of 25-5. Despite the decisive result, players from Monta Vista expressed a positive outlook on the season and highlighted the team’s perseverance and growing spirit.

According to junior Nandita Joshi, a mixed doubles player for the Matadors, the team anticipated a difficult match against Lynbrook, recognizing their opponent as a strong program. “We knew going into the game that LHS was a strong school and would be difficult to beat,” Joshi said. However, she emphasized that the Monta Vista team competed fiercely, with many matches decided by a narrow margin.

Joshi, who also competes in badminton for Monta Vista in 2024 and 2025, according to Monta Vista Athletics, expressed optimism about the season’s trajectory. She believes continued hard work during practices will be key to the team’s development, particularly with a significant number of freshmen on the roster. A crucial element, she added, is applying the coaching staff’s feedback consistently during both practice sessions and competitive games to maximize individual and collective improvement.

“Despite the score, I’m just happy to see the kind of plays that are going on,” Joshi stated. “Everyone’s trying their best no matter what the score is gonna be, and putting in that effort and playing until the very last point is really important.” This sentiment underscores a team culture focused on effort and dedication, even in the face of adversity.

A bright spot for Monta Vista came in the form of a victory secured by sophomore Aiden Wong and senior Amish Tyagi in a doubles match. Wong noted that whereas the team ultimately lost, he observed overall improvement in training and the application of coaching feedback. “I think our training has been showing,” Wong said. “People are getting pretty close games, like with Lucas Liu and Nandita Joshi, but Lynbrook is just overall better than us.”

Wong further elaborated on the progress made in his partnership with Tyagi. “With my partnership with Amish, our teamwork has been better in terms of our coordination around the court. The only mistake we had was just being inconsistent with our shots. But otherwise, our strategy and teamwork was pretty good.” This highlights a specific area of growth within the team – improved doubles coordination – even as they acknowledge the overall skill gap against Lynbrook.

Beyond individual skill and tactical execution, Joshi emphasized the importance of team spirit and mutual support. She observed a growing trend of teammates actively cheering each other on throughout the matches. “I’m definitely seeing a lot more people, especially as the game goes on, standing or on the sides, cheering on their teammates,” Joshi said. “I think that can always help during your game. Having a little support from your teammates definitely helps you play better, and vice versa.”

The loss to Lynbrook serves as a valuable learning experience for the Monta Vista badminton team. While the scoreline reflects a challenging match against a formidable opponent, the players demonstrated resilience, a commitment to improvement, and a strong sense of team camaraderie. For those unfamiliar with the sport, badminton involves two (doubles) or one (singles) players on each side of a net, attempting to hit a shuttlecock over the net and land it within the opponent’s half of the court.

Monta Vista will look to build on these positives as they continue their season.
