Treviso, Italy – Vanoli Basket Cremona travels to face Nutribullet Treviso on Sunday, with a victory potentially securing their Serie A survival. The match, set for 6:30 PM CET (12:30 PM EST), presents a significant opportunity for Cremona to solidify their position in the league standings, although Treviso faces a near-impossible task to avoid relegation.
Currently, Treviso sits at the bottom of the Serie A table, trailing Cremona by 10 points. A win for Cremona would extend that gap to 12 points, and with a favorable head-to-head record, would significantly bolster their chances of remaining in the league. For Treviso, the mathematical path to safety is steep, requiring seven wins in their remaining eight games – a challenge Coach Gigi Brotto described as a “mission impossible.”
The Cremona squad, however, isn’t taking anything for granted. Coming off a hard-fought contest against Germani Brescia, where a last-second three-pointer by Bilan denied them victory, Coach Brotto’s team has focused on mental and physical recovery. “Resetting” after such a close loss proved more difficult than anticipated, but the team understands the stakes.
The desire to secure Serie A status is palpable within the Cremona locker room, with players also looking towards a potential push for a playoff spot. Treviso, despite their league position, is considered a dangerous opponent, known for a somewhat erratic style of play capable of producing unexpected results. Cremona must avoid being drawn into Treviso’s unpredictable rhythm, maintaining control of the game and composure under pressure.
Limiting turnovers will be crucial for Cremona, as those possessions can quickly fuel Treviso’s transition offense. Exploiting mismatches and punishing defensive switches will also be key. Treviso is known to gamble defensively, attempting to steal the ball and initiate fast breaks, requiring Burns and his teammates to execute their planned plays with precision – focusing on cuts, blocks, and accurate passing.
Despite their struggles, Nutribullet Treviso has shown signs of improvement, particularly through the performances of Macura, and Croswell. The Treviso roster also includes Weber, Rahkman, MuaremI, Torresani, Miaschi, Pinkins, Chillo, Guidolin, Pellegrino, Olisevicius, Radosevic, and Spinazzè.
Adding to Cremona’s arsenal is their newest acquisition, RaeQuan Battle, a 2001-born American shooting guard. Battle began his European career with Leicester Riders of the British Basketball League (SLB) and previously played college basketball for Washington Huskies (2019-2021), Montana State Bobcats (2021-2023), and West Virginia Mountaineers. His addition provides Coach Brotto with another offensive option and a player with strong one-on-one skills.
Coach Brotto emphasized the difficulty of the upcoming match, acknowledging Treviso’s desperation for points to remain in the relegation battle. “I expect to face a team that will fight for every possession, spurred on by their home crowd at the PalaVerde,” Brotto said. He noted that Treviso has undergone changes since their first encounter, adding players in both the guard and frontcourt positions, resulting in a new team identity. “They’ve managed to make all their recent games competitive, losing only due to unfortunate breaks.”
“We are aware that this will be a challenge that we must face with maximum attention and determination,” Brotto continued. “I believe the team has reached the maturity necessary to impact the game well. For them, it’s almost their last chance; for us, it’s a direct confrontation with an eye towards safety. Beyond that, we want to get back on track and try to compete for positions in the standings that we can still aspire to.”
Regarding Battle’s arrival, Brotto explained that the team had been monitoring him for some time. While the team’s recent success had initially dissuaded them from adding another player, they ultimately decided to bring him in to increase their chances of winning more games. “While the opportunity with Udom presented itself and we seized it, the arrival of Battle stems from the desire to add a player with different characteristics than the ones I already have, possessing excellent one-on-one qualities. He started getting to know his teammates and our style of play yesterday, and we’ll try to integrate him even better in the coming days. He will likely be available on Sunday, barring any unforeseen circumstances, and we intend to test him out.”
This game represents more than just a single contest in the Serie A season; it’s a pivotal moment for both teams, with significant implications for their respective futures. Cremona aims to secure their league status, while Treviso fights to keep their relegation hopes alive. The PalaVerde is expected to be a lively venue, adding to the intensity of this crucial matchup.
Following Sunday’s game, Vanoli Cremona will return home to prepare for their next challenge, details of which will be announced on the official Lega Basket Serie A website. Fans can stay updated on the team’s progress and schedule through their official channels.
