The Dutch rider edged out Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) in a gripping uphill sprint to the finish. Del Toro’s strong performance also propelled him into the overall race lead, taking the blue jersey from stage 1 winner Filippo Ganna.
The 10th of March stage, following closely on the heels of the Strade Bianche, reintroduced the unpredictable element of gravel roads to the Tirreno-Adriatico. A 5.3-kilometer gravel sector near the finale proved decisive, shattering the field and setting the stage for a dramatic conclusion.
A Chaotic Stage Unfolds
The second stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico saw an early breakaway attempt from Manuele Tarozzi (Bardiani CSF 7 Saber), Joan Bou (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Alessandro Iacchi (Soulution Tech Nippo Rali), and Diego Pablo Sevilla (Polti VisitMalta). Sevilla claimed the first King of the Mountains (GPM) point at Castelnuovo Val di Cecina. However, the peloton reeled in the escapees 25 kilometers from the finish line, just as a light rain began to fall, adding another layer of difficulty to the already demanding course.
As the race approached the gravel section, Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor) initially set a fast pace, but it was Van der Poel who truly ignited the race. Del Toro, Pellizzari, and Matteo Jorgenson (Visma | Lease a Bike) quickly latched onto Van der Poel’s wheel. A crash involving Jorgenson, however, disrupted the group’s momentum, forcing Del Toro and Pellizzari to expend extra energy to rejoin the leaders. Meanwhile, Filippo Ganna began to struggle, and Thymen Arensman (Ineos Grenadiers) suffered a significant setback after crashing on the same wet gravel corner.
Emerging from the gravel sector, Van der Poel, Pellizzari, and Del Toro established a clear lead. Del Toro, focused on the general classification, refused to contribute to the pace-setting, leaving Van der Poel to drive the tempo towards San Gimignano. Pellizzari attempted a late attack on the paved roads leading to the finish, but Van der Poel responded decisively, ultimately taking the stage win in a close sprint.
The remaining contenders arrived 17 seconds behind the leading trio. Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal-QuickStep) lost 35 seconds, while Jan Christen (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), Jai Hindley (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe), and Michael Storer (Tudor) conceded 57 seconds. Arensman, after his crash, finished 1 minute and 38 seconds down.
