Miami, Florida – Tereza Valentová, 19, delivered on her billing as a favorite in the first round of the prestigious Miami Open, defeating Katie Volynets of the United States 6-2, 6-4. In contrast, Sara Bejlek, 20, returned to the court after a month-long absence with a disappointing performance, falling to Talia Gibson 6-1, 6-0.
Valentová is making her debut appearance at the Miami Open, and she’ll leave the Sunshine Swing with at least one victory to her name. Following a first-round loss in Indian Wells, the Czech player began her Florida campaign with a win, successfully navigating a match where she was widely expected to prevail against Volynets.
Valentová dominated on her own serve throughout the match, facing only one break point opportunity. She capitalized on her return, particularly against Volynets’ second serve, although the American demonstrated a high percentage of first serves landed.
Despite Volynets’ strong serving, Valentová created eight break point chances, converting half of them. The first set was particularly one-sided for the Czech player. A five-game winning streak propelled her to a 5-1 lead, and she comfortably closed out the set.
The second set began favorably for Valentová, immediately breaking Volynets’ serve. She had another opportunity in a marathon fifth game, but Volynets managed to hold. However, losing the game didn’t significantly disrupt Valentová, who continued to control most of the rallies.
A slight wobble came in the eighth game, where Valentová offered Volynets a single break point, which the American converted with a strong forehand. Valentová responded well, immediately breaking back to regain a 5-4 lead and the chance to serve out the match. She did so relatively easily, securing the victory in just under an hour and a half.
While not a significant scalp, this victory is important for Valentová, one of the rising stars of last season. She has struggled for consistent form and results this year, and her win over Volynets ends a three-match losing streak that included a loss to eventual champion Karolína Muchová in Doha, a controversial retirement in Dubai, and a defeat against Donna Vekić in Indian Wells. Valentová has played six tournaments this season, reaching the second round only at the Australian Open.
Valentová will have the opportunity to improve her statistics on Friday, when she faces the No. 20 seed, Diana Shnaider, in the second round of the Miami Open. This will be their first career meeting.
From the outset, Bejlek had to contend with the aggressive play of a confident Gibson and was largely on the defensive in the rallies. She had a chance to win the first two games, but Gibson saved break points at 15-30 on her serve, and Bejlek failed to convert a game point on her own serve, falling behind 0-2.
Bejlek immediately responded, leveling the score with the help of errors from Gibson. However, Gibson quickly regained control, restoring her lead and moving to 4-1. While the Australian continued to play solidly, Bejlek accumulated errors, double faults, and essentially made things easier for her opponent, failing to win another game in the set.
The second set began with Bejlek committing two double faults and losing her serve with a clean game. She had an opportunity to get back on level terms, but Gibson denied her any of her four break point chances.
Gibson continued to dominate, ultimately completing a dominant victory. Bejlek had a chance to break back when trailing 0-5, but couldn’t convert. Bejlek failed to hold serve throughout the entire match and lost 1-6, 0-6 after just over an hour of play.
Bejlek was facing Gibson for the second time in her career, and it was expected she would position up a stronger fight this time. However, it became clear that this opponent doesn’t suit her game. Four years ago in Canberra, Australia, she suffered an even more lopsided defeat, 0-6, 0-6.
Bejlek was playing for the first time after a month-long absence due to an abdominal muscle injury, ending an eight-match winning streak that included a shocking triumph at the 500-level event in Abu Dhabi. Gibson, meanwhile, has been excelling. The Australian played the best tournament of her career at the Indian Wells 1000 event, qualifying for her first quarterfinal on the main tour.
Gibson is continuing in excellent form in Miami, where she has won three consecutive matches, including qualifying. She didn’t concede a set to Ekaterina Gorgodze or Kamilla Rakhimova. In the second round, she will face former world No. 1 and 2022 finalist Naomi Osaka.
