Sardinia is gearing up to host the 39th edition of the Trofeo “A. Segni,” a long-standing national basketball tournament for Under 15 athletes. The competition, a key event in the regional youth basketball calendar, will take place from April 1st to 3rd, bringing together some of Italy’s most promising young players.
The tournament will feature eight teams in the men’s bracket: Astro, A.S.M. Morbegno ’70, Roma Eur, Esquilino Basket, Sancat Firenze, Esperia Olimpia Cagliari, G.S.O. Elmas, and Genneruxi. On the women’s side, four teams will compete: Astro, Cus Cagliari, Pallacanestro Femminile Firenze, and A.S.M. Morbegno ’70. The event represents a significant opportunity for these young athletes to showcase their skills and gain valuable competitive experience.
The men’s tournament will be structured with teams divided into two groups, culminating in final matches to determine placement. The women’s tournament will utilize a round-robin format, with the team accumulating the most points declared the winner. The teams from Tuscany, Sancat Firenze and Pallacanestro Femminile Firenze, enter the competition as the defending champions and are considered strong contenders for the title. The tournament’s opening ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, April 1st, at 8:00 PM local time (20:00 CET) at the PalaMellano in Sestu, with representatives from local institutions expected to attend. The games themselves will begin on Thursday, April 2nd, and conclude on the evening of Friday, April 3rd.
Matches will be held across three venues: the PalaMellano in Sestu, the PalaCep “Don Aldo Matzeu” in Cagliari, and a court in Genneruxi on Via Zagabria. This distribution of games allows for greater accessibility for fans and provides a variety of playing environments for the athletes. Following the on-court action, a traditional team outing to Torre delle Stelle is planned for Saturday, April 4th, offering a chance for camaraderie and relaxation.
The Trofeo Segni is supported by the Regione Sardegna, the municipalities of Sestu and Cagliari, the CONI Sardegna, the FIP Sardegna, and sponsors Ser.Lu Costruzioni and Scocca. The involvement of these organizations underscores the tournament’s importance to the local community and its commitment to fostering youth sports development. Families within the community will also contribute by hosting the participating athletes, further emphasizing the collaborative spirit of the event.
Ermanno Iaci, the honorary president of Astro, highlighted the tournament’s enduring legacy, noting that players from the inaugural 1985 edition are now parents of current participants. “Over the years, the event has involved approximately 6,000 athletes, officials, referees, and host families,” Iaci said. This speaks to the tournament’s deep roots and its sustained impact on the Sardinian basketball community.
Riccardo Fiorelli, president of Astro, emphasized the tournament’s significance as a crucial step in the athletic development of young players. “The Trofeo Segni is now an important step in the sporting growth of boys and girls and a much-awaited event in our club’s season,” Fiorelli stated.
