TRAPANI, Italy – Valerio Antonini, president of the Trapani Shark basketball club, has escalated his battle with the Italian Basketball Federation (FIP) and the Lega Basket Serie A, announcing plans to seek substantial financial compensation and even a potential suspension of the current league season. The dispute stems from the club’s exclusion from the Serie A competition, a decision Antonini vehemently contests.
Antonini, in a recent public statement, detailed his intent to file a claim for 70 million euros against the FIP and a separate claim for 10 million euros against the Lega Basket. These demands are rooted in what Antonini describes as “illegitimate” and “farce” decisions that led to Trapani Shark’s removal from the league. The situation is further complicated by pending rulings from the College of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), which Antonini believes will support his claims.

He believes that if the CONI rulings on May 8th align with his expectations, the FIP’s decisions will be deemed null and void, opening the door for a TAR intervention. “If I am forced to, we will ask the TAR for a definitive suspension of this championship,” Antonini declared. “I consider this championship a farce that deprived the strongest team at that time, namely Trapani Shark, of its rightful place.”
This isn’t the first instance of disciplinary action against Trapani Shark. In December 2025, the Federal Court of Justice penalized the club with a three-point deduction and handed President Antonini a two-year ban, effective until December 30, 2027, for violations of articles 59 and 61 of the regulations. The FIP detailed the ruling on its website, citing objective liability for the violations.
