Former Marseille Player Toifilou Maoulida Collapses During U17 Match
A scare for former Olympique de Marseille player Toifilou Maoulida this Sunday, as the current U17 coach experienced a medical incident during a youth national league match. The game was immediately halted and Maoulida was attended to by emergency services before being transported to a local hospital, according to witnesses.
Maoulida, who played as a forward for Olympique de Marseille between 2006 and 2007, began his coaching career in 2018. “The desire to coach emerged at Nîmes (between 2014 and 2016), where I had a role with the youth players as Bernard Blaquart asked me to,” he explained in an interview published Saturday in L’Équipe. He previously served as an attacking coach at Nîmes, then coached the U16 and U19 teams for three years, before becoming an assistant coach for the OM U19s. He returned to Metz, where he also played, in 2023.
Toifilou Maoulida Suffers Medical Episode
In the summer of 2024, Toifilou Maoulida took on the role of head coach for Metz’s U17 team, known as the Grenats. “It’s going well. Beyond the results, our priority is to develop the players so they can feed into the first team,” he stated. This Sunday, his team was facing Torcy in a match that was disrupted by the incident involving the former OM player. According to reports from L’Équipe, Maoulida experienced a sudden malaise shortly before halftime.
“He Was Conscious But Had Difficulty Speaking”
“Just before halftime, he collapsed to the ground. He was conscious but had difficulty speaking. There wasn’t a cardiac problem requiring immediate intervention. The firefighters took care of him and transported him to the hospital. The match delegate logically decided to end the match,” a Torcy official recounted. The match was therefore not completed, and Metz confirmed to L’Équipe that Toifilou Maoulida had been taken to the hospital, but did not provide further details regarding his condition.
The incident understandably brought a halt to proceedings and raised concerns for the well-being of the former professional footballer. Maoulida’s playing career included stints at several French clubs, and his transition into coaching has been marked by a dedication to youth development. His time at Marseille, though relatively brief, remains a memorable chapter for fans of the club, and news of his health will undoubtedly be followed closely by the football community.
This situation highlights the importance of having medical personnel present at youth sporting events and the swift response required when a health emergency arises. Although details surrounding Maoulida’s condition remain scarce, the immediate attention he received from first responders was crucial.
Metz has yet to release a formal statement regarding Maoulida’s health, and updates are eagerly awaited by those connected to the club and the wider footballing world. The focus now is on his recovery, and we wish him a swift and full return to health.
The U17 National league match between Metz and Torcy will likely be rescheduled at a later date, but the immediate priority remains the health and well-being of coach Toifilou Maoulida. Archysport will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
