Voborníková Battles Shooting Lane Chaos, Krčmář Sits Out Mixed Relay

Otepää, Estonia – Tereza Voborníková experienced an unusual disruption during Saturday’s pursuit race at the Biathlon World Cup in Otepää, Estonia. A bizarre situation involving a contested shooting lane left the Czech biathlete rattled, impacting her performance as she ultimately finished 17th. Meanwhile, Michal Krčmář has announced he will not participate in Sunday’s mixed relay, citing fatigue.

The incident occurred before the third prone shooting stage. Voborníková arrived at the shooting range to find another competitor already occupying her assigned lane. “This hasn’t happened to me before, and I’ll need to discuss it with someone,” Voborníková told Czech Television. “Another athlete steps onto the lane I’m already on, and then we start yelling at each other…”

Officials ultimately directed Voborníková to shooting station number one, a change that clearly unsettled her. “I don’t know how this could happen… I even yelled at the judges, who just shrugged their shoulders… I don’t know who else was supposed to advise me,” she added, noting that 30 seconds were ultimately deducted from her overall time as a result of the confusion.

The disruption clearly affected her shooting. “I was completely shaken on that standing stage because I didn’t know if I would be disqualified… I didn’t know what I was supposed to do. But at the same time, I wanted to shoot in the back, because the wind is a little more favorable there than up front,” Voborníková explained. She missed two shots on the standing stage, incurring two penalty loops of 150 meters each.

Despite the setback, Voborníková, who secured a bronze medal in the mass start at the recent Olympic Games in Anterselva, continues to demonstrate strong form. She has now finished in the top ten in four consecutive races. “I was angry for the whole lap. Luckily, they deducted that half-minute for me, but it was unnecessary. I never want to experience this again,” she said.

Challenging Conditions and a Strong Sprint Foundation

Voborníková’s pursuit race followed a successful sprint performance on Thursday, where she finished seventh – her second-best career result in a sprint, surpassed only by a sixth-place finish in Oslo three years ago. The sprint showcased her clean shooting, a hallmark of her recent success. Julia Simon of France won the sprint, followed by Italy’s Lisa Vittozzi and fellow Frenchwoman Lou Jeanmonnot, who similarly secured the modest crystal globe for the sprint standings.

However, the pursuit race presented significantly more challenging conditions. Strong and shifting winds made accurate shooting difficult for all competitors. Voborníková also struggled on the prone stage, missing three targets. “Unfortunately, I think I had less wind there, so all my shots were on the other side. I didn’t even feel like it was less windy than during the warm-up. Then I reacted, and it was better. I really don’t look forward to tomorrow,” she said, referencing Sunday’s mixed relay.

Krčmář Sits Out Mixed Relay Due to Fatigue

Adding to the Czech team’s challenges, Michal Krčmář will not compete in Sunday’s mixed relay. Krčmář, who finished 49th in the pursuit, announced his decision on Instagram, stating, “Empty battery. In the current state of my strength, I don’t think I would be helpful to the team in the relays… I’m very sorry, but we’re looking at it realistically! So, unfortunately, I won’t be at the start tomorrow.”

The Czech team will now field Tomáš Mikyska, Mikuláš Karlík, Jessica Jislová, and Tereza Vinklárková in the mixed relay. The mixed relay double will start at 12:35 local time (UTC+2), followed by the single mixed relay at 14:40.

Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Laegreid and Italian Lisa Vittozzi won the men’s and women’s pursuit races respectively. Laegreid dominated, finishing more than two and a half minutes ahead of France’s Émilien Jacquelin, whereas Vittozzi secured victory over Finland’s Suvi Minkkinen and France’s Lou Jeanmonnot. Vítězslav Hornig finished 15th, and Karlík finished 16th.

The Biathlon World Cup in Otepää continues on Sunday with the mixed relay events. The venue will also host the 2027 Biathlon World Championships, making this week’s competition a valuable preparation opportunity for athletes and organizers alike.
