Prague – Simon Deli, a beloved figure for Slavia Prague, has announced his retirement from professional football due to a persistent thigh muscle injury. The 34-year-old Ivory Coast international will be honored before Sunday’s highly anticipated derby match against Sparta Prague at the Eden Arena.
Deli shared his decision with the club’s official website, expressing his disappointment at not being able to end his career with a title or a final appearance on the pitch. “I wanted to say goodbye with a title, or at least in a big match directly on the field. But my health won’t allow it. Due to the injury, I have to finish now. I still perceive the pain in my thigh muscle. I have to finally listen to my body,” Deli said.
The center-back’s career spanned several countries, beginning with Africa Sports d’Abidjan in his native Ivory Coast. He first arrived in the Czech Republic with Sparta Prague in 2012, though he didn’t make a league appearance for the club. Deli gained valuable experience through loan spells at České Budějovice in the Czech National Football League and Příbram in the Czech First League. He later played in Belgium with Club Brugge and spent three years in Turkey with Adana Demirspor and Istanbulspor.
However, it was at Slavia Prague where Deli truly made his mark. He secured three Czech First League titles in 2017, 2019, and 2021, and also won the Czech Cup three times. His connection with the club’s supporters was particularly strong, fueled by his approachable personality and unique way of speaking the Czech language. Fans affectionately nicknamed him “Bráška” – meaning “brother” – a term he readily embraced.
“The relationship with the fans was crazy, in the best sense of the word. I love them! Ending my career at Slavia was the most important thing, I don’t want anything else. Slavia made me a happy footballer who can be proud of himself. I experienced the most beautiful moments here,” Deli reflected.
Deli returned to Slavia Prague on two separate occasions. First, he rejoined on loan from Club Brugge in the second half of the 2020/21 season, contributing to his third league title. He then returned before the start of the current season, tasked with mentoring younger players in the club’s reserve team, which competes in the Czech National Football League.
Unfortunately, a recurring thigh muscle injury limited him to just seven appearances for the reserve side. This ultimately led to the difficult decision to retire. According to sparta.cz, Deli initially joined České Budějovice on loan, gaining crucial playing time in the second tier of Czech football.
The club will honor Deli with a pre-match ceremony before the derby against Sparta Prague. He expressed his hope for a Slavia victory, believing it would be a fitting farewell. “I hope we win, that the fans will be happy. If Here’s the last time we witness each other,” Deli concluded.
Deli’s career also included appearances for the Ivory Coast national team, earning 26 caps. He was a consistent presence in defense for Slavia Prague during a period of significant success for the club. His departure marks the end of an era for the Sešívaní (Maroon-and-White) faithful.
The upcoming derby carries significant weight in the Czech First League title race. Slavia Prague will be looking to capitalize on Deli’s inspirational presence, even in retirement, as they push for another championship.
