Mainz 05 secured their place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League, defeating Sigma Olomouc 2-0 on Thursday. The aggregate score of 2-0 sends the Bundesliga side through, while bringing an end to a memorable European run for the Czech team. The match, played in Mainz, Germany, saw Sigma Olomouc struggle to overcome the pressure from the home side, ultimately falling short of completing a fairytale journey in the competition.
Sigma Olomouc manager, Václav Janočka, acknowledged the dominance of Mainz following the match. “We knew it would be a very difficult match, and that proved to be the case. It was clear from the first to the last minute. The home side won absolutely deservedly, they were clearly better. We must congratulate them on their victory and advancement,” he said, as reported by Sport.cz.
The first half ended scoreless, a result Janočka admitted offered a glimmer of hope, but ultimately proved insufficient. “The half-time draw was great for us. It still kept us in the game for advancement. However, we would have to be more active and not sleep through the start of the second half. Even after Mainz’s leading goal, there was no reason to give up. But the red card for Péter Baráth and Mainz’s second goal took away our hope of continuing our fairytale,” he explained.
According to reports from the match, Sigma Olomouc lacked the attacking impetus needed to trouble the Mainz defense. Janočka noted his team’s struggles in the final third. “We should have been more varied in our attacking runs. When we tried to build up play, we always ran into trouble. The home side were exceptionally well-organized defensively. We also lacked boldness and courage, as well as better individual performances. There was no one who shone and was able to break down the opponent’s defense. The enthusiasm of the substitutes Mikulenka and Šíp revitalized our game, but overall it wasn’t enough. It was clear that most of the guys were playing such a duel for the first time,” he stated.
The turning point in the match, as highlighted by BBC Sport, came with the sending off of Baráth, which significantly hampered Olomouc’s chances. Danny da Costa and Armindu Sieb were the goalscorers for Mainz, with Sieb’s strike in the 82nd minute effectively sealing the victory. The report also noted that Olomouc’s late attempts to find a goal were thwarted by Mainz goalkeeper Daniel Batz.
Despite the disappointment, Janočka expressed pride in his team’s overall performance in the Conference League. “I am proud of what we have achieved. I must rate our participation in the Conference League only positively. To be among the sixteen best is a great success. Who would have expected us to defend the flag of Czech football like this and also help our coefficient? We really showed ourselves in European cups. Everyone in the club gained valuable experience. We tried the carousel that happens in European cups. We traveled through various countries, learned about their cultures and different playing styles. We could capitalize on that in the future. Maybe our knees won’t buckle so much anymore,” he said.
Janočka emphasized the necessitate for his players to quickly refocus on domestic league duties. “Now the players will gain a few days off, and when we meet again, we will talk about it. The nominations for the match will now be relentless. No rotations as before. Only those who are hungry for success will get into it. We must do everything People can to improve our current position in the table and be able to take trips to Europe again next season as we did this year. Our path leads through the league,” he added.
Sigma Olomouc’s run in the Conference League, while ending in defeat, represents a significant achievement for the club and Czech football. Their journey provided valuable experience and exposure, and Janočka is hopeful that the lessons learned will benefit the team in the future. The focus now shifts back to the Czech league, where Sigma will aim to build on their European experience and continue their pursuit of success.
Mainz, meanwhile, will look ahead to the quarter-final draw with confidence, hoping to continue their impressive form in the Conference League. Their victory over Sigma Olomouc demonstrates their quality and ambition, and they will be a formidable opponent for any team in the next round.
Next Up: Sigma Olomouc will return to Czech First League action on March 28th against FK Pardubice. Mainz 05 will await the quarter-final draw to determine their next opponent in the UEFA Europa Conference League.
