LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Rams are considering a reunion with veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins as a potential backup to reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford, head coach Sean McVay indicated Monday. The possibility arises as the Rams similarly evaluate re-signing Jimmy Garoppolo, whose future with the team remains uncertain.
McVay’s comments, made during an appearance on PFT Live at the NFL’s annual league meetings in Phoenix, highlighted Cousins’ significant role in his own career trajectory. “Kirk is as influential as anybody in helping me receive to L.A. In the first place,” McVay said. “I understand he’s got some other options and some other suitors but Jimmy and Kirk are guys that I would love to be able to have back with us.”
The potential move comes after a surprising turn of events for Cousins, who was released by the Atlanta Falcons on March 11, just two years into a four-year, $180 million contract. The 35-year-old Cousins, who will turn 38 in August, is now a free agent and represents a potentially intriguing option for a team seeking experienced depth at the quarterback position.
Cousins and McVay previously worked together for three seasons in Washington, beginning in 2015 when McVay served as the offensive coordinator. During that time, the Redskins, led by Cousins, won the NFC East title. That shared history clearly weighs on McVay’s thinking as he assesses the Rams’ quarterback room.
While Stafford remains firmly entrenched as the starter, the Rams need a reliable backup. Garoppolo has served in that role for the past two seasons, but his status is unclear as he is also a free agent and could explore opportunities elsewhere. The Rams’ interest in Cousins suggests they are prepared to explore all available options to ensure stability behind Stafford.
Cousins’ 2023 season with the Falcons was marked by both promise, and adversity. He initially displayed strong form, throwing for 1,721 yards, 10 touchdowns, and five interceptions in eight starts after being sidelined by an Achilles tendon injury sustained in Week 8. Prior to the injury, he had thrown for 18 touchdowns against 16 interceptions. His performance upon returning from injury offered a glimpse of the player McVay knows well, but ultimately wasn’t enough to salvage the Falcons’ season, as rookie Michael Penix Jr. Took over the starting role.
Over a 14-year NFL career, Cousins has completed 66.7% of his passes for 44,700 yards, 298 touchdowns, and 131 interceptions. A four-time Pro Bowler, he brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record as a starter. However, his age and recent injury history will undoubtedly be factors in the Rams’ evaluation.
The Rams’ decision will likely hinge on several factors, including Cousins’ asking price, his health, and the potential availability of other veteran quarterbacks. The team will also need to weigh the benefits of continuity with Garoppolo against the potential upside of reuniting with a quarterback who played a key role in McVay’s early success.
For Cousins, a move to the Rams would offer a chance to compete for a Super Bowl alongside a proven head coach and a talented roster. It would also provide a stable environment and a clear role as Stafford’s primary backup, potentially extending his career and allowing him to contribute to a winning team.
The quarterback landscape continues to evolve as the NFL offseason progresses. The Rams’ interest in Kirk Cousins adds another layer of intrigue to the proceedings, and the coming weeks will determine whether a reunion between McVay and his former signal-caller will materialize.
The Rams will next hold organized team activities (OTAs) in May, providing a first glimpse of the team’s quarterback situation as it takes shape. Further updates on the quarterback competition are expected throughout the offseason.
