Schalke Maintains 2. Bundesliga Lead Despite Draw with Darmstadt
DARMSTADT, Germany – Schalke 04 secured a 1-1 draw against Darmstadt 98 in a crucial 2. Bundesliga top-of-the-table clash on Saturday, maintaining their narrow lead at the summit despite playing without suspended star striker Edin Dzeko. The result leaves Schalke just one point ahead of SV Elversberg and SC Paderborn with seven matches remaining in the season.
Moussa Sylla, who came into the starting lineup to replace Dzeko, opened the scoring for Schalke in the 44th minute. The Malian forward headed home a corner from Adil Aouchiche, marking his first goal for the club since October and a significant moment after a previously stalled winter transfer to New York. Sylla’s celebration included a jubilant embrace with manager Miron Muslic, highlighting the importance of the goal.
Moussa Sylla (26) celebrates his first goal since October, giving Schalke the lead.
However, Darmstadt responded quickly, equalizing just before halftime through Isac Lidberg in the 45+4th minute. Lidberg’s 14th goal of the season makes him the current leading scorer in the 2. Bundesliga. The goal came after a headed layoff from Pfeiffer, allowing Lidberg to finish with a composed turn, and shot.
The match also featured a bizarre incident in the 18th minute when Schalke appeared to score an own goal. After Loris Karius saved a shot from Fabian Nürnberger, Nikola Katic’s attempted clearance deflected off a prone Moussa Ndiaye and into the net. However, the goal was disallowed after a VAR review revealed Nürnberger had fouled Ndiaye in the build-up.
Darmstadt suffered a further setback in the 23rd minute when Luca Marseiler was forced off the pitch on a stretcher with a serious knee injury, sustained without any contact from an opposing player. The severity of the injury is yet to be fully determined.
The second half saw both goalkeepers called into action. Schalke’s Loris Karius made crucial saves against Fraser Hornby in the 62nd and 76th minutes, although Schalke substitutes Christian Gomis (84th minute) and Becker (82nd minute) were unable to capitalize on their opportunities to secure a late winner.
The match took place against the backdrop of positive news regarding Edin Dzeko’s suspension. The DFB Sports Court reduced Dzeko’s ban from two matches to one following a successful appeal on Thursday. Dzeko was originally shown a red card in Schalke’s previous match against Hannover 96. He will now miss only the match against Darmstadt 98 and will be available for selection against Karlsruher SC on April 5th. Dzeko had already traveled to Bosnia to be with his family during his suspension.
This draw keeps Schalke at the top of the 2. Bundesliga table, but the race for promotion remains incredibly tight. Elversberg and Paderborn are breathing down their necks, and Darmstadt remain within striking distance. The congested nature of the league table means every point is crucial as the season enters its final stages.
Schalke’s next challenge will be to maintain their form and capitalize on their remaining fixtures. The return of Dzeko after the international break will undoubtedly provide a significant boost to their attacking options. For Darmstadt, the focus will be on recovering from Marseiler’s injury and continuing their push for promotion.
The 2. Bundesliga season is proving to be one of the most competitive in recent memory, and fans can expect a thrilling finish as the battle for promotion intensifies.
What’s Next: Schalke 04 will face Karlsruher SC on April 5th following the international break. Darmstadt 98 will look to bounce back in their next fixture, details of which will be announced shortly.
