Rooise Badminton Club: 48 Years of Sport & Community in Sint-Oedenrode

Sint-Oedenrode, Netherlands – For 48 years, the sound of shuttlecocks being struck has echoed in the Rooi region of the Netherlands. But this isn’t casual backyard badminton; it’s the dedicated play of the Rooise Badminton Club (RBC), a local institution where sportiviteit and gezelligheid – sportsmanship and conviviality – are paramount. The club recently transitioned to a new facility at the Kienehoef sports hall, marking a new chapter in its long history.

Even as membership numbers have dipped to around 50, the passion for the sport remains strong within RBC. The club caters to a diverse group, from a dedicated Friday morning group of seniors – roughly 60 percent of whom are members – to more competitive players who capture to the courts on Friday and Wednesday evenings. “The average age is probably around forty,” explains Jelle Botman, a 27-year-old member of the club’s board. “I’m one of the youngest, I think.”

The current age demographic is a shift from RBC’s past. Several years ago, the club made the difficult decision to discontinue its youth program due to dwindling participation. “We ended up with only three or four young players,” Botman explains. “There was hardly any new intake. We decided to move those youth players up to the senior ranks. It was a shame, but we had no other choice. Years ago, we had over 100 members, and a thriving youth section.”

Despite the change in demographics, RBC maintains a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Players often find themselves competing with and against the same faces, fostering a strong sense of community. The club as well participates in competitive play through the Helmondse Badminton Bond (HBB), having previously been affiliated with the national Dutch badminton association. “We stopped with the national association about twenty years ago,” Botman says. “With the HBB, all the competition matches are played in a large hall in Helmond. There are no home or away games; everything is settled there.”

To maintain a sense of camaraderie, RBC organizes exchange evenings with other clubs. “We arrange to play at their facilities or host them at ours. It’s more relaxed because there’s more time to socialize and have a drink afterwards. We regularly play with clubs like Schijndel,” Botman adds.

The move to the new Kienehoef sports hall hasn’t been without its adjustments. Members have noted that the spaces between courts are smaller, and the back lines are closer to the walls, limiting run-off space. The new canteen also lacks the cozy atmosphere of the previous one. “Everyone had to get used to it,” Botman admits. “We’re getting there, but it’s different. We really miss the old canteen.”

Despite these changes, the members of RBC continue to enjoy their weekly games. The level of play is competitive, and the sport provides a valuable outlet for physical activity and social interaction. “It helps me relieve frustrations and worries, it’s wonderful,” Botman says. “You also make quality contacts, and you get better as you play more often. That makes it even more enjoyable.”

The Rooise Badminton Club’s longevity speaks to its enduring appeal within the Sint-Oedenrode community. While the landscape of local sports clubs is constantly evolving, RBC’s commitment to sportsmanship, social connection, and a love of the game ensures its continued presence for years to come. The club’s location at Wijkcentrum “De Groene Long” Frederikstraat 41, Sint-Oedenrode, and contact number 0413-476802, remain consistent as they navigate this new era.

For those interested in learning more about the club or potentially joining, reaching out through their official channels is the best first step. RBC offers opportunities for both competitive and recreational players, fostering a welcoming environment for all skill levels.

The next scheduled activities for RBC include regular weekly play sessions at the Kienehoef sports hall, as well as planned exchange evenings with neighboring clubs. Keep an eye on their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/RooiseBadmintonClub/) for updates and announcements.
