EINDHOVEN, Netherlands – PSV Eindhoven will honor Dutch football legend Ronald Koeman with a permanent place in the club’s Walk of Fame on Saturday, March 7, 2026, prior to their Eredivisie match against AZ Alkmaar. The ceremony recognizes Koeman’s significant contributions to PSV both as a player and a manager, cementing his legacy in Eindhoven.
Koeman, currently the manager of the Netherlands national team, enjoyed a highly successful spell with PSV between 1986, and 1989. During his time as a player, he helped the club secure three Dutch Eredivisie titles, two KNVB Cups, and, most notably, the European Cup I (now the Champions League) in 1988 – a landmark achievement in PSV’s history. He later returned to the club as manager, leading them to another league title in 2007.
The Walk of Fame, located near the Oost-tribune at the Philips Stadion, already features 24 prominent figures associated with PSV. Each honoree is commemorated with a tile, often including a footprint or handprint. Luuk de Jong, who recently concluded a lengthy and impactful stint with the club, was the most recent addition to the Walk of Fame. Koeman will be present at the Philips Stadion to witness the unveiling of his tile.
A Goal-Scoring Defender
Koeman distinguished himself during his playing days at PSV not only as a solid defender but also as a prolific goalscorer, a rare combination for a player in his position. He netted 51 goals in 130 appearances for the club, frequently utilizing his exceptional free-kick ability. This talent for finding the back of the net proved crucial in many of PSV’s successes during his tenure. His ability to score from defense continued to be a hallmark of his career, notably during his time with FC Barcelona, where he won the European Cup in 1992.
Koeman’s impact extended beyond goals. He was known for his leadership, tactical intelligence, and ability to dictate play from the back, qualities that made him a pivotal figure in both the PSV and Dutch national teams.
A Legacy of Success
The decision to honor Koeman isn’t simply a gesture of nostalgia; it’s a recognition of his lasting impact on PSV. As Marcel Brands, a former PSV director, stated through club channels, Koeman “place PSV on the map not once, but twice.” This dual contribution – as a key player in a golden era and as a successful manager – sets him apart and justifies his inclusion in the Walk of Fame.
The timing of the ceremony is also significant. PSV is currently competing for honors, and the club is keen to emphasize its rich history and tradition. Adding Koeman to the Walk of Fame reinforces the club’s identity and celebrates the individuals who have shaped its success. The Walk of Fame, sponsored by Energiedirect, began in 2022 with eleven initial inductees and continues to grow annually.
Joining a Prestigious Group
Koeman joins a distinguished group of former PSV players and managers already honored with a tile in the Walk of Fame. Among those previously recognized are Hans van Breukelen, Berry van Aerle, Willy van de Kerkhof, Ruud Gullit, and Jan Heintze, all key figures from PSV’s successful past. Guus Hiddink, a highly respected manager who also had a significant impact on the club, is also among those commemorated.
With his inclusion, Ronald Koeman’s name will forever be linked to the Philips Stadion and the storied history of PSV, both as a player who delivered European glory and as a coach who brought domestic success back to the club. The tile serves as a lasting tribute to a true PSV icon.
Following the unveiling ceremony, PSV will face AZ Alkmaar in a crucial Eredivisie match at the Philips Stadion. Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00 PM CET (2:00 PM EST). The match represents an important opportunity for PSV to strengthen their position at the top of the league table.
