Ron Foxcroft to Receive CFL’s Hugh Campbell Distinguished Leadership Award

TORONTO (March 13, 2026) – Ron Foxcroft, a name synonymous with innovation in sports officiating and unwavering support for those who enforce the rules, will receive the Canadian Football League’s (CFL) Hugh Campbell Distinguished Leadership Award. The recognition honors his considerable impact on officiating within the League. Foxcroft, an entrepreneur and former basketball referee, will accept the award during the CFL’s Coach of the Year Celebration on March 25th at the Westin Hotel in Edmonton.

Foxcroft’s influence extends far beyond the sidelines. His iconic invention – the Fox 40 whistle, recognizable for its pealess design – is a fixture in Canadian and international sports, sounding hundreds of times in every CFL game. However, it’s his steadfast dedication to supporting and recognizing officials that truly sets him apart and earns him a place among the CFL’s greatest builders and advocates.

“Too often, the good work of officials goes unnoticed and is undervalued, but not by Ron,” said CFL Commissioner Stewart Johnston. “His efforts to recognize the work of CFL officials are unmatched, and we deeply appreciate everything he does to support them as they prepare for their biggest moments on our sport’s biggest stage.”

For over three decades, Foxcroft and Fox 40 have paid tribute to Grey Cup officials. Each year, prior to the championship game, Foxcroft hosts a dinner for the officiating crew and presents them with a Grey Cup Officials Ring, a symbol of their professional excellence. This tradition underscores his commitment to fostering respect and appreciation for the often-unseen work of those ensuring fair play.

Foxcroft’s passion for football extends beyond officiating. As co-chair of the 84th Grey Cup in Hamilton, Ontario, he played a key role in organizing an unforgettable event for his hometown and the surrounding region. He collaborated closely with League executives, staff, and commissioners, leveraging his business acumen and passion to promote the growth of football and strengthen community ties.

“When I learned that I was the recipient of this prestigious award, I was deeply touched and honored,” Foxcroft stated. “And seeing the remarkable list of past recipients only reinforced that feeling. I am sincerely grateful for this honor, and I am very proud to be among these distinguished recipients.”

The Hugh Campbell Award is named after a true legend of the CFL. Hugh Campbell boasts ten Grey Cup championships as a player, coach, general manager, and executive. Since 2006, the award bearing his name has recognized individuals demonstrating exceptional leadership and making significant contributions to the League. Past recipients include Wally Buono, Norman Kwong, Bob Ackles, and John Hufnagel – a testament to the award’s prestige and the caliber of leaders it celebrates.

The Coach of the Year Celebration will not only honor Foxcroft but also recognize the outstanding achievements of the 2025 season. Corey Mace, head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, or his counterpart Jason Maas of the Montreal Alouettes, will be honored for their remarkable performances. The League will also present the inaugural Ted-Goveia Football Operations Award, recognizing excellence in player scouting, evaluation, roster construction, and leadership within a team’s football operations staff.

The evening’s program will feature a keynote address by Angus Reid, a motivational speaker, 13-year CFL veteran, and two-time Grey Cup champion. Football Alberta and the Edmonton Elks will also use the occasion to honor several coaches from the province who are dedicated to developing the next generation of players.

A silent auction will be held as part of the festivities, with all proceeds benefiting local amateur football initiatives and programs. Auction items include a helmet signed by the Saskatchewan Roughriders, the reigning Grey Cup champions; a VIP experience for four people at a Labour Day Classic in Calgary on September 7th; a dinner with Ottawa REDBLACKS receiver Geno Lewis and Vice-President of Football Operations Shawn Burke; and more.

The event will begin with a reception at 6:00 PM Mountain Time (UTC-7), followed by a three-course dinner and awards presentation at 7:00 PM Mountain Time.

Individual tickets are available for $200 plus taxes and fees. Tables of 10 are also available for $1750 plus taxes and fees. Click here to purchase tickets.

The CFL season is rapidly approaching, with teams preparing for the challenges ahead. Fans can appear forward to another exciting year of Canadian football, with the league continuing to prioritize player safety, competitive balance, and fan engagement.
