Karnal, Haryana – A long-awaited project to bolster sports infrastructure in the Karnal district is gaining momentum, with plans underway to construct dedicated badminton and boxing halls at Karna Stadium. The development, initially announced by former Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, aims to address a critical shortage of training facilities for athletes in the region and promote a stronger sports culture.
For years, badminton and boxing players in Karnal have faced significant challenges due to limited access to adequate training spaces. Currently, badminton enthusiasts have access to only two courts, a number considered insufficient given the growing popularity of the sport. Boxing players are similarly hampered, forced to train under makeshift arrangements within an under-construction facility linked to the Smart City Mission. The project will involve demolishing the existing gymnastic hall-cum-skating rink to develop way for the new construction. According to finalized plans, the boxing hall will occupy the ground floor of the new building, while a four-court badminton facility will be built on the first floor. Initial proposals called for six badminton courts, but the revised design accommodates four, a change that officials say streamlines the project without significantly impacting its benefits.
The total estimated cost for the project is approximately Rs 11 crore (roughly $1.32 million USD as of March 24, 2026). The Sports Department has formally requested the Public Works Department (PWD) to begin the demolition of the current gymnastic hall, signaling a significant step forward after years of delays. District Sports Officer (DSO) Rajbir Rana confirmed that the project drawings have been approved and the tender process to select a construction agency will be initiated shortly.
“We will ensure the speedy construction with quality work,” Rana stated, emphasizing the department’s commitment to delivering the facilities efficiently. He added that the new infrastructure is expected to not only improve training standards but likewise inspire more young people to participate in sports.

Kewal, a local badminton player, expressed relief at the prospect of increased court availability. “We have been waiting for additional badminton courts for years. With more courts, training will become more professional,” he said. Amit, an aspiring boxer, echoed this sentiment, noting that the current training arrangements are often disruptive and inadequate. “The new hall will help us practice properly,” he added.
This investment in Karna Stadium builds on previous improvements made to the facility. In September 2019, a synthetic track costing Rs 7.96 crore (approximately $950,000 USD as of March 24, 2026) was inaugurated by then-Chief Minister Khattar, providing a modern training ground for track and field athletes. The synthetic track has already proven to be a valuable asset, attracting athletes from across the region.
The Haryana Sports Department, under the leadership of Principal Secretary Vijay Singh Dahiya, has been actively promoting sports development throughout the state.
