Madrid, Spain – Rafael Nadal, one of the most celebrated athletes of all time, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). The distinction, the highest academic honor the institution can bestow, recognizes Nadal’s dedication, perseverance and the values he embodies, both on and off the court. The ceremony took place Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at the UPM’s Paraninfo hall, presided over by UPM Rector Óscar García Suárez.
The 39-year-old Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, two-time Olympic gold medalist, and five-time Davis Cup winner with Spain, added another accolade to his illustrious career. Dressed in the traditional academic attire – toga, light green muceta (distinctive of the center), white gloves, a ring, and a biretta – Nadal expressed his gratitude and reflected on his journey.

“The world of high-level sport is deeply connected to scientific knowledge,” Nadal stated during his acceptance speech. “I belong to a generation of athletes where scientific advancements were increasingly incorporated. I receive this distinction not only as a personal recognition but as a recognition of sport and the values it represents. Throughout my career, I have received many accolades, but those from the academic world hold a very special value. I would like to remember something that is also valid for work at the university: work, discipline, and humility are as important as talent.”
The UPM’s decision to honor Nadal was made in March 2022, and the investiture was proposed by Javier Durán, a professor in the Faculty of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences at the UPM. Durán served as Nadal’s sponsor during the ceremony.
Rector García Suárez lauded Nadal’s impact, stating, “You have taught us that being number one goes beyond a ranking. We are honored to welcome Nadal because he has transcended sport. The bridges we build are not built by chance, the technologies that transform our lives are the result of years of work and perseverance. In that sense, sport is very similar to our work. We admire the humility, discipline, and ability to overcome obstacles. Few careers have embodied this dual demand – technical and human – as much as Rafa Nadal’s.”
Durán echoed this sentiment, noting, “It is no coincidence that this recognition of a figure who transcends sport takes place at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. Because here, knowledge is built with rigor, where every achievement is the fruit of constant work and where error is part of the learning process, we find a perfect mirror in the figure of Rafa Nadal. At our university, the real challenge is not just to pass, but to grow. It’s not just about arriving, but about becoming someone capable of surpassing themselves to get there. To sporting admiration, we add moral admiration.”

This isn’t Nadal’s first foray into the academic world. In October 2025, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Salamanca, Spain’s oldest academic institution. He also has a long-standing collaboration with the Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio, contributing to the development of higher education programs for professional training.
The investiture ceremony, attended by rectors from other Madrid universities and a large gathering of UPM faculty, was accompanied by the beautiful voices of a choir. Nadal, visibly moved, spoke of his life experiences and offered words of encouragement to the students in attendance.
Nadal’s receipt of this honor underscores his impact beyond the tennis court, recognizing his embodiment of dedication, perseverance, and humility – qualities the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid clearly values. The UPM’s recognition of Nadal highlights the intersection of athletic achievement and the pursuit of knowledge, celebrating a figure who has excelled in both realms.
As Nadal continues to inspire fans worldwide, his latest accolade serves as a testament to his enduring legacy and his commitment to excellence in all endeavors. Whereas his competitive tennis career has evolved, his influence and dedication to pushing boundaries remain as strong as ever.
