Putri KW Maintains Top Seed Status with Straight-Set Win at Swiss Open 2026
BASEL, Switzerland – Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani delivered a commanding performance Wednesday at the Swiss Open 2026, defeating India’s Tanvi Sharma in straight sets to advance to the round of 16. The 23-year-old, seeded first in the tournament, showcased her dominance with a 21-11, 21-10 victory at St. Jakobshalle.
The win ensures Putri KW remains the lone Indonesian representative in the women’s singles draw at this year’s Swiss Open, a Super 300 event on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) tour. It too solidifies her position as a strong contender for the title, building on a successful run of form that has seen her reach the semifinals of the Malaysia Open and India Open twice this year, as well as the quarterfinals at the All England Open.
Early Pressure, Decisive Response
While the match lasted just 30 minutes, it wasn’t without an initial challenge from Sharma. The Indian player kept pace with Putri early in the first game, forcing a 5-5 tie. Sharma even briefly took the lead, moving ahead 7-5 with a series of well-placed shots. Although, Putri responded emphatically, capitalizing on a string of unforced errors from her opponent to swing the momentum in her favor.
A crucial run of points saw Putri take a lead into the interval, finishing the first game strong at 11-8. She continued to build on that advantage after the break, ultimately closing out the first game 21-11.
Dominant Second Game
Putri Kusuma Wardani started the second game with increased intensity, quickly establishing control. After falling behind 3-2, she reeled off six consecutive points to take an 8-3 lead, demonstrating her superior court coverage and shot-making ability.
The momentum continued to build for the Indonesian star. After the interval, Putri extended her lead to 12-4, and then surged ahead to match point at 20-8. Despite Sharma managing to win a couple of points, Putri sealed the victory with a well-placed shot that Sharma couldn’t return, winning the second game 21-10.
“At first it was a little tense because Tanvi Sharma has recently been in the spotlight because she beat Okuhara and played rubber against Wang Zhi Yi,” Putri said after the match, acknowledging her opponent’s recent successes. She added that she focused on executing her game plan and utilizing all her techniques during the match.
Looking Ahead
Putri KW’s next opponent will be the winner of the match between Huang Yu-hsun of Chinese Taipei and Wong Ling Ching of Malaysia. The round of 16 promises to be a challenging test for the Indonesian, but she appears confident and in good form.
This tournament marks Putri’s fifth on the 2026 calendar. Her performance at the Swiss Open is a key indicator of her preparation for the upcoming major tournaments later in the season. Her best result at the Swiss Open came last year, when she reached the semifinals.
The Swiss Open continues to deliver exciting badminton action, and Putri Kusuma Wardani’s advancement is a positive sign for Indonesian badminton fans. She will look to continue her winning streak and make a deep run in the tournament.
Next up: Putri Kusuma Wardani will await the result of the Huang Yu-hsun vs. Wong Ling Ching match to determine her quarterfinal opponent. Updates will be available on the BWF website and through official tournament channels.
