Puerto Rico Falls to Italy in FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Opener
San Juan, Puerto Rico – The Puerto Rican Women’s National Basketball Team began its quest for a spot in the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup with a challenging opening-round loss, falling 78-41 to Italy on Wednesday at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot. The defeat marks a difficult start for the team as they compete in the FIBA qualifying tournament.
Italy controlled the game from the outset, establishing a lead they would never relinquish. The European squad’s dominance was evident in their shooting efficiency, converting 52.5% of their two-point attempts, 37.5% from beyond the arc, and an impressive 64.29% from the free-throw line. Puerto Rico, by comparison, struggled to find its rhythm, shooting just 30.95% from the field, 17.65% on three-pointers, and 54.55% from the charity stripe.
Offensive Struggles and Key Performances
Jackeline Benítez and Zaida González were the primary offensive contributors for Puerto Rico, each finishing with eight points. Imani McGee and Tayra Meléndez anchored the rebounding effort, securing seven boards apiece. But, the team’s offensive output was hampered by a quiet performance from star guard Arella Guirantes, who played limited minutes (7:10) and scored only two points.
Puerto Rico’s head coach, Gerardo “Jerry” Batista, attributed Guirantes’ limited impact to a physical issue. “She’s sore, that’s all. She’s not injured,” Batista explained. “If everyone knew the story of how she was able to get out and get here at this moment, maybe they would understand. We’re not going to say it, because it’s something private. But right now she’s a little sore and we’re working with that. We’ve been preparing her since she arrived, and she’ll be okay.”
Guirantes’ journey to the tournament was particularly challenging. She recently competed with Elitzur Ramla in Israel when the region experienced heightened conflict. The player faced difficulties departing Israeli airspace due to closures, ultimately arriving in Puerto Rico on Sunday. Batista indicated that the team would not rush Guirantes back into full action until she is fully recovered.
Italy’s Dominance and Puerto Rico’s Challenges
Costanza Verona led Italy in scoring with 16 points, while Sara Madera added 13. The Italian team’s consistent shooting and defensive pressure proved too much for Puerto Rico to overcome.
Batista acknowledged the lack of preparation time with the full squad as a contributing factor to the team’s performance. “As Zayda said, this was our first game all together. We’ve only been together for the last two days in practice. I think we faced a great team, and really, every time we play well as a team is when we’ve had time to be together as a group. To be able to play well against a team like that you need preparation, and we didn’t have it,” he stated.
González echoed her coach’s sentiments, highlighting Italy’s offensive intensity and its impact on Puerto Rico’s defense. “The biggest difference I saw tonight between our team and Italy was that they made us move a lot on defense. They were constantly cutting to the basket and moving without the ball, so we had to react, switch marks, and make a lot of defensive adjustments. I think we need to improve in that aspect,” she said. “Offensively, I think we didn’t make them work as much as they made us work. I think that was the main difference.”
Looking Ahead: Focus on Qualification
Despite the opening-game setback, Batista emphasized the team’s unwavering focus on qualifying for the World Cup. “This team has a lot of experience. We know what we came here for. This is a long tournament, and we are here to qualify for the World Cup, which is the most important thing. It’s not about one or two games, but about achieving qualification for the tournament. In that sense, we are well prepared for that.”
In other Wednesday matches, Spain defeated New Zealand 99-50, and the United States dominated Senegal 110-46. The tournament, which runs through March 17th at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico, offers three qualifying spots for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in Berlin, Germany from September 4th to 13th. Each team will play five games, with the top three teams advancing.
Puerto Rico’s next challenge comes on Thursday against a formidable United States team. The game will be a crucial test for the Puerto Rican squad as they aim to rebound from this initial defeat and remain in contention for a World Cup berth. The match is scheduled to take place at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot, with tip-off time to be announced.
