Schick Declines Czech Captaincy, Focuses on Crucial World Cup Qualifier Against Ireland
Leverkusen, Germany – Bayer Leverkusen forward Patrik Schick has stated he does not desire the captain’s armband for the Czech Republic national team, deferring to teammates he believes are better suited for the role. Schick, recovering from a recent minor injury, is fully focused on the upcoming World Cup qualifying match against Ireland, viewing it as a pivotal opportunity for his nation.
The 28-year-old forward recently returned to action after a two-week spell on the sidelines with a minor injury, playing a part in Bayer Leverkusen’s recent matches, including a disappointing loss to Heidenheim. Despite the setback, Schick expressed satisfaction at regaining his fitness and contributing goals, allowing him to rejoin the national team setup. “I am healthy, which is the most important thing for me,” Schick said. “I had a minor injury for two weeks, but it wasn’t serious. I knew I would be back soon. We had a tough schedule coming up, maybe the toughest matches of the season. We played Arsenal and Bayern twice. The duel with Heidenheim didn’t go well, but I’m glad I scored at least two goals and can come to represent [the Czech Republic].”
Navigating Club and Country Demands
The transition between club and international football is a familiar one for Schick, who doesn’t anticipate any difficulty adjusting. “Every match is important to me, whether it’s on the weekend or in the Champions League,” he explained. “I don’t really see any need for reorientation. Now we’re going for the national team, we’re playing for a place at the World Cup, and I see it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We’ll see if I get a chance to fight for the championship again in the future. The importance is certainly maximal.”
Schick acknowledged that his recent injury disrupted his momentum, but remains committed to regaining peak form. “No injury helps anything. On the contrary, it’s always a negative impact. A person gets out of rhythm and has to deal with it,” he stated.
Captaincy Decision and Team Dynamics
The topic of the national team captaincy has been a subject of discussion, with Schick and teammate Pavel Šulc among the candidates. However, Schick has made it clear he doesn’t seek the responsibility. “I’ve said several times that I don’t want to be captain. There are more suitable candidates, and I don’t need to be a leader just because of the armband. I try to lead the team with my performances on the pitch. The armband too doesn’t affect what I offer to the team off the pitch. Now it’s up to the coach to decide.”
Czech Republic coach Jaroslav Koubek reportedly consulted with a select group of players regarding the captaincy, including Schick. While Schick declined to reveal his specific input, he confirmed he shared his perspective with the manager. “I have my own view, which I told him, but logically I won’t reveal it. I didn’t give him specific tips; he had those himself.”
Preparing for a “War” Against Ireland
Looking ahead to the crucial World Cup qualifier against Ireland, Schick anticipates a fiercely contested match. Koubek has described the upcoming fixture as a “war,” a sentiment Schick shares. “Whether it’s the first or the second match, both will be similar. Everyone, including the Irish, feels they have a chance to make it. We don’t expect anything but a fight.”
Schick also revealed a recent conversation with Koubek during a visit to Leverkusen, focusing on the coach’s vision and plans for the team. “We talked, but more generally – about ideas, plans, and vision. It was similar to what it was like with previous coaches. Every coach wants to prepare the players so that they get his ideas into their heads.”
Leverkusen’s Season and Darida’s Return
Beyond the international break, Schick reflected on Bayer Leverkusen’s season, acknowledging their primary goal remains Champions League qualification. Despite recent setbacks, they remain in contention, and are also still in the German Cup semi-finals. “Our realistic goal is to qualify for the Champions League. We complicate things for ourselves weekend after weekend. We are still in the German Cup, where we are in the semi-finals. We have it well underway and can finish the season with a trophy. Fortunately, our competitors in the fight for the Champions League are also losing points, so we are still within striking distance. The end of the Bundesliga will be very interesting.”
The return of experienced midfielder Vladimír Darida to the national team is seen as a positive boost. “It’s always good to have a healthy mix. It’s not an advantage to have only young players or only experienced players. I know Vláďa Darida from when we played together in the national team. He is a quality footballer and a great guy who will fit in without problems. It hasn’t been that long since he finished in the national team. He can help us.”
Regarding potential attacking partnerships, Schick remained open to playing alongside Tomáš Chorý, acknowledging that a two-striker system could lead to a more attacking approach. “I don’t know yet what the lineup will be. Of course, if we played with Tomáš Chorý, it would mean a more offensive approach.” He added, with a smile, “When you play with two strikers, especially of that type, it’s logical that you want to attack. But it’s football. Basically, I don’t worry about the formation because it’s constantly changing – both at the club and in the national team.”
The Czech Republic faces a challenging path to the World Cup, but with experienced players like Schick and Darida returning to the fold, they will be hoping to secure a positive result against Ireland.
