Para-Badminton Outreach: Promoting Inclusion Through Sport & Healthcare Partnerships

Nancy, France – The French Badminton Federation (FFBaD) recently concluded a two-day initiative, dubbed “Impulsion para-bad,” aimed at promoting para-badminton and badminton for the deaf and hard of hearing. The program, held March 13th and 14th, 2026, focused on raising awareness, providing practical experience, and fostering connections between various stakeholders in the Lorraine region.

The FFBaD began its outreach at the Institut Régional de Réadaptation (IRR) in Nancy, a specialized rehabilitation hospital and university center. There, they introduced para-badminton and offered an adapted practice session. The IRR is part of the regional rehabilitation institute, a hospital-university establishment for MPR (Medical Rehabilitation and Physical Rehabilitation) in Lorraine. More information about the IRR can be found here.

The federation then engaged with instructors and students at the Institut de Formation en Ergothérapie de Nancy, the Institute for Ergotherapy Training. The goal was to educate future healthcare professionals about the role of sport, and badminton specifically, in supporting individuals with disabilities. This segment highlighted the therapeutic benefits of adaptive sports and the importance of inclusive practices within rehabilitation programs.

Saturday’s activities took place at TSB Jarville, where discussions centered on the development of para-badminton and the actions needed to further its growth. The event included a practical sensitization session featuring a “handi-bad” platform. This platform comprised various workshops designed to simulate the challenges faced by para-badminton athletes with different impairments, as well as an introduction to badminton for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Adding significant weight to the event, two high-level para-badminton athletes shared their personal journeys, experiences, and the positive impact the sport has had on their lives. Their stories served as inspiration and provided valuable insights into the dedication and resilience required to compete at a high level.

The “Impulsion para-bad” program successfully engaged a broad range of participants – clubs, medical facilities, students, healthcare professionals, and the federation itself – fostering meaningful connections and exchanges. According to the FFBaD, the initiative achieved its objectives by strengthening relationships between key actors in the para-badminton community. The program’s success underscores the growing recognition of para-badminton as a viable and inclusive sporting option.

The FFBaD expressed gratitude to all partner organizations, dedicated professionals, clubs, students, athletes, and everyone who contributed to making the event a success. The initiative highlights a broader trend in French sport towards greater inclusivity and accessibility for athletes of all abilities.

Para-badminton, a rapidly growing discipline, offers opportunities for athletes with physical, visual, and intellectual impairments. The sport follows the same basic rules as traditional badminton, but with modifications to accommodate different disabilities. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) oversees the international development of para-badminton, and it is a featured sport in the Paralympic Games.

The Institut Régional de Médecine Physique et Réadaptation in Nancy, where the FFBaD began its outreach, provides specialized services in physical rehabilitation and is a key resource for individuals recovering from injury or living with disabilities. You can find more information about the institute here.

The FFBaD’s commitment to para-badminton extends beyond awareness campaigns. The federation actively supports the development of para-badminton programs at the grassroots level, providing coaching resources and opportunities for athletes to compete. This latest initiative builds on those efforts, aiming to create a more inclusive and accessible sporting landscape in France.

Looking ahead, the FFBaD will continue to build on the momentum generated by “Impulsion para-bad.” The federation has not yet announced specific follow-up events, but plans are underway to expand para-badminton programs and increase participation across the country. Fans interested in learning more about para-badminton and supporting the FFBaD’s initiatives can visit the federation’s website at www.ffbad.org.

The success of this program serves as a model for other national badminton federations seeking to promote inclusivity and expand opportunities for athletes with disabilities. It demonstrates the power of collaboration and the importance of raising awareness to break down barriers and create a more equitable sporting environment.
