Netflix, Coupang Play & TVING: OTT Platforms Battle for Viewers with Live BTS, Sports & More

The battle for streaming supremacy is intensifying, and the latest front in the war isn’t just about scripted dramas or extensive film libraries. Online video services (OTT) are increasingly turning to live content – from global music sensations to high-octane motorsports – to attract and retain subscribers. This shift is particularly evident in South Korea, where Netflix, Coupang Play, and TVING are all making significant investments in live broadcasts.

Netflix is set to exclusively stream the highly anticipated comeback performance of BTS, the world-renowned South Korean boy band, on March 21st. The event, dubbed ‘BTS Comeback Live: ARIRANG,’ will originate from Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul and marks Netflix’s first-ever live broadcast originating from South Korea. It’s also the platform’s first foray into live music performances, signaling a broader strategy to expand its real-time offerings. The broadcast celebrates the release of BTS’s fifth full-length album, ‘ARIRANG.’

This move by Netflix isn’t isolated. In January, the streaming giant broadcast a live climb of Taipei 101 by American free climber Alex Honnold. Further expanding its live sports portfolio, Netflix has also secured the rights to stream weekly programs and major live events from World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Notably, Netflix will also broadcast the 2026 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix in May, marking its debut in live motorsports broadcasting.

Coupang Play isn’t standing still. The platform is aggressively targeting sports fans, beginning with live coverage of the Australian Grand Prix on March 6th. Coupang Play will provide 4K ultra-high-definition broadcasts of all 24 rounds of the 2026 Formula 1 season, with on-site coverage of 10 Grand Prix locations – a significant investment in domestic F1 broadcasting. This commitment builds on Coupang Play’s recent successes with live broadcasts of the NFL Super Bowl and the NBA All-Star Game.

Prior to the F1 season, Coupang Play also secured rights to broadcast Major League Soccer (MLS) matches featuring LAFC, with Korean-language commentary beginning February 22nd. The platform also broadcast the entirety of Super Bowl LIX in February, featuring Korean-language commentary and a special guest appearance by singer ‘Cadergarden.’ In March, Coupang Play is preparing to exclusively stream the Japanese dome tour performance of the group TREASURE.

TVING is also joining the live content race, securing exclusive broadcasting rights for the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC), which runs through March 17th. The WBC, often referred to as the “mini-Olympics” of baseball, features national teams competing for international glory. TVING also holds the rights to broadcast Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) games through 2026.

The surge in live content acquisition by these OTT platforms is a direct response to the increasingly competitive landscape. The subscription-based model relies on compelling content to attract and retain users, and live events offer a unique draw. Data from Wiseapp·Retail indicates the impact of this strategy: Coupang Play’s monthly active users (MAU) increased by 12% in February to 8.79 million, coinciding with its broadcasts of the Super Bowl and NBA All-Star Game.

In contrast, Netflix experienced a 2.65% decrease in MAU in February, dropping to 14.90 million, while TVING saw a 3.2% increase to 5.52 million. These figures highlight the immediate impact live events can have on user engagement. Live content, particularly in sports and concerts, benefits from a dedicated fan base that can quickly drive platform adoption.

Industry analysts believe that live content will be a crucial differentiator for OTT platforms in the years to come. As one industry source noted, live broadcasts offer a unique ability to draw in viewers at specific moments, something that was traditionally the domain of terrestrial and cable television. Now, OTT platforms are focusing on capturing that same level of engagement and buzz, leading to a fierce competition for exclusive live content rights.

The stakes are high as these platforms vie for dominance in the streaming market. The ability to deliver compelling live experiences will likely be a key factor in determining which services thrive and which struggle to keep pace. For sports fans and music lovers, the competition translates to more options and greater access to the events they care about most.

Looking ahead, the next major live event on the horizon for Netflix is the 2026 F1 Canadian Grand Prix in May. For Coupang Play, the focus remains on delivering comprehensive coverage of the entire Formula 1 season, alongside continued broadcasts of MLS and other sporting events. TVING will continue to broadcast KBO league games and will likely seek to expand its live sports portfolio further.
