Lusail, Qatar – MotoGP has announced the postponement of the Qatar Grand Prix, originally scheduled for April 10-12, to November 6-8, 2026, due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East. The decision, made in coordination with the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), the series promoter, and Qatari authorities, prioritizes the safety and well-being of all involved in the championship.
The move comes as a direct response to the volatile geopolitical situation following recent attacks involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, as well as retaliatory actions impacting countries throughout the Gulf region. The broader conflict has already led to the cancellation of Formula 1 races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, highlighting the increasing challenges of hosting international sporting events in the area. MotoGP opted for a postponement rather than outright cancellation, expressing hope that conditions will improve later in the year.
This isn’t simply a reshuffling of dates; the postponement creates a significant gap in the 2026 MotoGP calendar. A three-week break will now exist between the Grand Prix of the Americas in Austin, Texas, at the end of March, and the Grand Prix of Spain at Jerez, scheduled for the last weekend of April. The shift also impacts the final two rounds of the season.
The Portuguese Grand Prix, previously slated for late November, will now be held at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimão from November 20-22. The season finale at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia, Spain, has been pushed back a week to November 27-29. The traditional post-season test at Valencia remains tentatively scheduled for December 1, pending confirmation.
“This decision has been taken with careful consideration and in full coordination with our partners in Qatar and throughout the paddock,” stated Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of MotoGP, in an official statement. “Our priority is always the safety and well-being of all those involved in MotoGP, as well as ensuring that each Grand Prix is celebrated with the highest level of quality possible. We are also aware of the importance of providing clarity to our fans as soon as possible, and ticket holders will have the opportunity to exchange their tickets for the new event.”
Ezpeleta also expressed gratitude to the organizers in Portimão and Valencia for their flexibility in accommodating the revised schedule. “We are confident that the updated calendar will allow us to maintain the quality of the championship and, at the same time, offer fans an exceptional racing season.”
The decision to postpone, rather than cancel, the Qatar Grand Prix reflects a commitment to maintaining a full championship calendar, if feasible. The Losail International Circuit, host to the Qatar race, is a popular venue known for its challenging layout and exciting night races. The circuit’s facilities are considered among the best on the MotoGP calendar, making it a valuable asset to the series.
For fans who have already purchased tickets for the April race, MotoGP has assured them that they will be able to exchange their tickets for the November event. Details regarding the exchange process will be communicated directly to ticket holders. The situation underscores the increasing impact of geopolitical events on the world of sports, forcing organizers to prioritize safety and adapt to rapidly changing circumstances.
