Drafted 51st overall in 2025, the 20-year-old French forward has quickly become a fan favorite and a valuable contributor for the New York Knicks, exceeding expectations and solidifying his place in a team with championship aspirations. From Paris to the NBA: A Winding Road
Diawara’s basketball story began in the Parisian suburbs, starting with La Domrémy Basket 13 before progressing through Saint-Charles Basket in Charenton-le-Pont and then the prestigious INSEP academy. He later joined Paris Basketball, gaining experience in France’s top-tier league. However, his path wasn’t always linear. A loan spell to Poitiers in December 2023, due to limited playing time, was followed by a move to Cholet Basket in the summer of 2024, where he continued to develop before entering the 2025 NBA Draft.
Selected by the Los Angeles Clippers, Diawara was immediately traded to the Knicks, signing a guaranteed contract on October 20, 2025. This gamble by the New York franchise has quickly paid dividends.

In his first NBA season, Diawara is averaging 3.5 points on 43.3% shooting (36.8% from three-point range), with 1.4 rebounds and 0.7 assists in 9 minutes per game across 60 appearances. Whereas these numbers may not be overwhelming, his efficiency and impact have been highly valued by the coaching staff. “I just stayed myself. I worked hard and showed that I could be an asset on the court,” Diawara explained. He understands his role as a rookie, stating, “I’m a rookie, you have to keep working to earn your place. And that’s it. That’s my motivation every day.”

Diawara has quickly resonated with the New York fanbase. His energy, commitment, and willingness to do the little things have made him a popular figure at Madison Square Garden. He appreciates the support, saying, “I’m happy, it’s quality to know that a lot of people appreciate you and aim for to observe you shine.” He’s embraced the atmosphere, enjoying the passion of the New York fans and feeling comfortable in the city. “I’m from Paris, so it’s not a very big difference, really,” he noted.

He set a new NBA career-high with 18 points (7-of-9 shooting, including 4-of-4 from three-point range) in 18 minutes against the New Orleans Pelicans in late December 2025. He’s focused on continuous improvement, stating, “I always think about the three-point shot, even though I’ve improved. And then, off-ball play and on-ball play. Frankly, that’s my all-around game.”

Despite the surprise some have expressed at his rapid development, Diawara isn’t surprised by his own success. “No, for me, I’m not a surprise. I know my abilities, I know what I’m capable of,” he asserted. He’s quickly learning from the veteran players in the Knicks’ locker room. “All the teammates, (Mikal) Bridges, Miles McBride, they all attempt to grant me advice,” he said, absorbing the knowledge and experience of his colleagues.
Eyes on the French National Team
A spot on the French national team is too on Diawara’s radar. “It’s in the back of my mind. Of course, if the French team calls me, I’ll be happy to go,” he said, adding that he hasn’t yet been contacted by the team’s general manager, Boris Diaw. He’s already had the opportunity to connect with other French NBA players, including Nicolas Batum and Rudy Gobert.
Diawara also shared his admiration for some of the NBA’s biggest stars, stating, “LeBron was the most impressive to me.” He also looks up to Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant, players he now faces on the court.
Focused on Collective Success
Despite his rookie status, Diawara approaches the game with a team-first mentality. The Knicks have high ambitions, and he shares that goal. “Win the championship, of course,” he stated. The team’s recent NBA Cup victory was a significant step. “It’s still a satisfaction, it’s a reward for the efforts we’ve set in this season.”
Diawara recognizes the challenges ahead, acknowledging the strong competition in the Eastern Conference, particularly from teams like Boston and Detroit. However, he’s confident in the Knicks’ ability to contend for a title.
