Amsterdam, Netherlands – Sixteen-year-old Mohamed Abdalla is quickly making a name for himself within the Ajax youth system, impressing coaches and observers alike with his skill and, perhaps more importantly, his dedication to self-improvement. Former Jong Ajax coach Willem Weijs recently lauded Abdalla’s perform ethic, noting the young midfielder’s proactive approach to analyzing his own performances and seeking feedback – a trait that has accelerated his development at the Dutch club.
Weijs, speaking with ESPN, admitted he initially had reservations about Abdalla’s playing style. “I must honestly say: I didn’t expect him to immediately become a starter for us,” Weijs said. “I had doubts about his way of playing. At Under 19, he would pick up the ball everywhere and then attempt a dribble. I wondered if he could do that in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie?”
Those doubts were quickly dispelled. After two substitute appearances, Abdalla proved he was ready for a starting role with Jong Ajax, the reserve team for the famed Dutch club. “He surprised me quite a bit,” Weijs explained. “After a few weeks, he was also dominant with his dribbles with us. It’s gone incredibly speedy.”
Abdalla, who joined Ajax from the PSV youth academy in the summer of 2024, isn’t simply relying on natural talent. Weijs describes him as a “box-to-box midfielder” possessing “excellent technical qualities combined with a strong body and duel strength.” He’s capable of beating defenders with quick dribbles, has a solid first touch, and a reasonable passing range, allowing him to effectively move the ball across the pitch. He also demonstrates the physicality needed to win challenges and regain possession.
What truly sets Abdalla apart, though, is his commitment to continuous learning. Ajax utilizes an internal online system allowing players to review their own matches. According to Weijs, Abdalla consistently uses this tool, meticulously analyzing his performances and proactively requesting feedback. “He would select his own actions and ask what he could have done better,” Weijs revealed.
While already making a significant impact, both Weijs and Abdalla recognize areas for continued growth. Weijs pointed to defensive positioning, contributing more to transitions, and making smarter decisions about when to attempt a dribble as key areas for development. Despite these areas for improvement, the transition from PSV’s youth setup to Ajax has been a resounding success thus far.
Abdalla’s progress hasn’t gone unnoticed by the Ajax first team, as he was included in the matchday squad for the senior side in early March. This call-up underscores his rapid ascent and potential to contribute at the highest level. Weijs believes a debut for Ajax 1 is within reach. “That he has the qualities to succeed at Ajax seems logical to me,” he concluded.
Jong Ajax, based at Sportpark De Toekomst in Amsterdam, serves as a crucial development ground for future Ajax stars. The team competes in the Eerste Divisie, the second tier of Dutch professional football, and while they are ineligible for promotion to the Eredivisie or participation in the KNVB Cup, their primary focus remains on nurturing talent for the senior squad. The club’s history is rich with players who have successfully transitioned from Jong Ajax to become key figures in the first team, and Mohamed Abdalla appears to be the next in line.
As Abdalla continues to hone his skills and gain experience, the Ajax faithful will be eagerly watching his progress. His dedication to improvement, combined with his natural talent, suggests a bright future for this promising young midfielder.
