MLS Issues Lifetime Bans to Derrick Jones and Yaw Yeboah for Gambling Violations
NEW YORK – Major League Soccer has issued lifetime suspensions to former players Derrick Jones and Yaw Yeboah for violating the league’s gambling policy. The unprecedented penalties, announced Monday, stem from an investigation into extensive betting on soccer matches, including wagers placed on their own teams during the 2024 and 2025 seasons. The league’s swift and severe response underscores a growing concern over sports betting integrity as the practice becomes increasingly widespread across the United States.
Investigation Reveals Extensive Gambling Activity
The MLS initiated the investigation after receiving suspicious betting alerts from its integrity partners. The league then retained the law firm Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP to conduct a thorough review. Both Jones and Yeboah were placed on administrative leave in October 2025, pending the outcome of the investigation. The findings, released this week, revealed a pattern of gambling that violated league rules.
According to the league, the players engaged in “extensive gambling on soccer,” and in one specific instance, both Jones and Yeboah bet on Jones to receive a yellow card during a match between the Columbus Crew and the New York Red Bulls on October 19, 2024. Jones was, in fact, issued a yellow card in the 35th minute of that contest. The investigation as well determined that the players “likely shared confidential information with other bettors about their intent to draw yellow cards,” a practice that further compromises the integrity of the game.
No Evidence of Match-Fixing, But Serious Breach of Policy
Even as the investigation uncovered significant gambling violations, MLS officials emphasized that there was no evidence to suggest the betting activity affected the outcome of any matches. “No evidence was identified that suggested any of these betting activities affected the outcome of a match,” the league stated in its official release. However, Commissioner Don Garber was firm in his condemnation of the players’ actions. “Major League Soccer remains steadfast in its commitment to match integrity,” Garber said. “The League will continue to enforce its policies, enhance education efforts, and advocate for the elimination of yellow card wagering in all states to protect the integrity of our competition for clubs, players, and fans.”
Players No Longer Under Contract
Neither Jones nor Yeboah was under contract with an MLS club at the time the suspensions were issued. Yeboah, a 28-year-old Ghanaian international, most recently played for LAFC, though his contract was terminated in January 2026. He previously won a championship with the Columbus Crew in 2023, after joining the league in 2022. Derrick Jones, 29, a native of Ghana who represents the United States internationally, has played for five different MLS teams throughout his career: Philadelphia Union, Nashville SC, Houston Dynamo FC, Charlotte FC, and the Columbus Crew. Both players were members of the Columbus Crew during the 2024 MLS season.
Growing Concerns Over Sports Betting and Integrity
The lifetime bans handed down to Jones and Yeboah are the latest in a series of high-profile gambling-related incidents in professional sports. In November 2025, two Major League Baseball (MLB) players were indicted for allegedly manipulating games. Late October 2025 saw NBA figures, including coach Chauncey Billups and player Terry Rozier, implicated in separate illegal gambling investigations. And in February 2026, a former baseball player was convicted of obstruction of justice and lying to investigators in connection with illegal betting.
These cases highlight a broader trend: as sports betting becomes more accessible – it’s now legal in a majority of U.S. States – the risk of integrity breaches increases. MLS has been proactive in addressing this challenge, working with jurisdictions to remove betting options on events like yellow and red cards. According to the league, 33 of 41 jurisdictions that allow betting do not permit wagers on cards, with 15 changing their rules following outreach from MLS. The league also provides players with training on its gambling policies, requiring them to certify completion of the program.
What This Means for MLS and Beyond
The severity of the penalties sent to Jones and Yeboah signals a clear message from MLS: gambling on matches, particularly by those within the league, will not be tolerated. The league’s commitment to protecting the integrity of its competition is paramount, especially as it continues to grow in popularity both domestically and internationally. The incident also raises questions about the effectiveness of current safeguards and the demand for continued vigilance as the sports betting landscape evolves.
The focus now shifts to ensuring that all players and personnel are fully aware of the league’s gambling policies and understand the potential consequences of violating those rules. MLS will likely continue to collaborate with integrity partners and advocate for stricter regulations to safeguard the fairness and credibility of its games. The league’s next steps will be closely watched by other sports organizations grappling with the challenges of a rapidly expanding sports betting market.
