Míchel Reveals He Rejected Real Madrid to Stay at Rayo Vallecano & His Ambition to Coach Manchester City

Girona manager Míchel Sánchez recently revealed a surprising story from his playing days: he once declined the opportunity to sign with Real Madrid. The revelation came during an appearance on the podcast La Otra Grada, where the Spanish tactician discussed his career, ambitions, and even potential future moves, including interest from Manchester City.

Míchel, who has guided Girona to a remarkable season and Champions League qualification, recounted a moment when he was poised to join the Spanish giants while playing for Rayo Vallecano. But, despite a dinner scheduled with then-Real Madrid coach Paco de Gracia to finalize the deal, Míchel ultimately chose to remain loyal to Rayo.

A Decision Rooted in Loyalty and Comfort

“We were supposed to sign with Real Madrid, and I didn’t show up,” Míchel explained. “I wanted to stay at Rayo Vallecano. Everyone told me to go to Madrid, and when the moment came, I told my father, ‘I’m not going.’ And I didn’t go.”

The Girona coach shared that Paco de Gracia has repeatedly reminded him of the missed opportunity over the years. “He always tells me, ‘I had dinner scheduled with you to sign for Real Madrid, and you didn’t come.’” Míchel attributed his decision to a feeling of contentment and security at Rayo, as well as a degree of apprehension about stepping into the unknown at a massive club like Real Madrid.

“It was what I felt at the time,” he said. “Often, it’s also about fears and feeling protected in your neighborhood, like I was with my friends, going to a place where you don’t know what you’ll find. I was closed off in my neighborhood… in my comfort zone.”

A Career Defined by Loyalty and Success

Míchel’s career has been largely defined by his strong connection to Rayo Vallecano. He spent 17 seasons across three spells with the Madrid-based club, becoming their all-time leading scorer with 55 goals and making 425 appearances. He also played for Almería, Murcia, and Málaga before retiring in 2012.

His managerial career has followed a similar trajectory of success and loyalty. He has led Rayo Vallecano, Huesca, and now Girona to promotions, winning championships with both Rayo and Huesca. His current role at Girona has been particularly impressive, transforming the club into a genuine contender and securing a coveted spot in the Champions League – a feat that has naturally drawn attention from larger clubs.

Interest From Manchester City

The success at Girona has inevitably led to speculation about Míchel’s future, with Manchester City emerging as a potential destination. Current City manager Pep Guardiola’s contract runs until June 2027, but there has been uncertainty surrounding his long-term plans, particularly after the team’s Champions League exit.

Míchel acknowledged the possibility of managing Manchester City, stating he feels ready for such a challenge. “I do see myself as ready [to coach City], I see myself ready to coach any team,” he said, adding with a laugh, “I don’t know if they [City] see it that way.” He emphasized his adaptability and desire to experience managing a team with significant resources and expectations.

To prepare for a potential move to the Premier League, Míchel is even taking English lessons. “I have an English teacher and I maintain working at it,” he revealed.

A Manager Preparing for the Next Step

Míchel’s story is one of a manager who values loyalty, comfort, and a strong connection to his roots. However, he is also ambitious and prepared to grab the next step in his career. His success at Girona has proven his capabilities, and his willingness to learn and adapt suggests he is ready for the challenges that come with managing a top club like Manchester City.

While he turned down Real Madrid once, the opportunity to manage one of the world’s elite clubs may prove too tempting to resist in the future. For now, Míchel remains focused on Girona and building on their impressive season, but the football world will be watching closely to see where his career takes him next.

Girona will return to La Liga action on [Date to be determined] against [Opponent to be determined]. The team will glance to continue their impressive form and solidify their position as one of the top teams in Spain.
