MH-SD: A Hub for Gymnastics, Freerunning, and Community Spirit
Middelharnis-Sommelsdijk (MH-SD) gymvereniging, the oldest gymnastics club on Goeree-Overflakkee, is celebrating its 78th anniversary this year. The club offers a diverse range of sporting activities, fostering a vibrant community for all ages and skill levels. Jacqueline de Vos, a board member of the association, recently discussed the club’s rich history, current offerings, and future plans on the radio program *Op de Hoagte*.
MH-SD currently boasts 264 active members, participating in gymnastics, freerunning, badminton, and a fitness program for women aged 50, and over. The club’s facilities are spread across Middelharnis, Sommelsdijk, and Stad aan ‘t Haringvliet, providing convenient access for residents throughout the region.
A History Rooted in Community
The history of MH-SD is filled with memorable moments. In 1979, the club hosted a demonstration by the Romanian Olympic gymnastics team in Middelharnis, a significant event for the local sporting community. De Vos fondly recalls past demonstrations by club members at the Meijertheater, showcasing impressive acrobatic feats and a spirit of camaraderie. A recent reunion for former members from the 1960s, 70s, and 80s further highlighted the club’s enduring legacy, with attendees enthusiastically singing the club song.
From Gymnastics to Freerunning: A Broad Spectrum of Activities
MH-SD caters to a wide range of interests and abilities. Gymnastics programs are available for various levels, including a select group for talented athletes aiming for higher levels of competition. Freerunning has gained significant popularity, attracting both boys and girls. Safety is paramount in freerunning, with outdoor sessions only permitted under approved conditions, although indoor training takes place on parkours and airtracks.
Beyond gymnastics and freerunning, MH-SD offers group lessons like Fit4All for adults, introductory gymnastics for young children (kleutergym), and badminton. This diverse range of activities ensures there’s something for everyone, promoting physical activity and a healthy lifestyle within the community.
The Demand for Volunteers and the Future of the Club
Like many community sports organizations, MH-SD relies on the dedication of volunteers. The club is currently seeking assistants, particularly those aged 15 and 16, to support coaches and provide more individualized attention to athletes. Volunteers can benefit from free training through the KNGU (Royal Netherlands Gymnastics Federation). Parents often assist with setting up equipment, but experienced individuals are needed to safely guide children through exercises and techniques.
De Vos emphasized the importance of creating a positive and enjoyable environment for members. “Gymnastics is better than watching TV,” she stated, reflecting the club’s motto of encouraging children to enjoy movement in any form. Regular social events, such as trips to trampoline parks and themed parties, help strengthen bonds between members and foster a sense of belonging.
MH-SD is committed to adapting to the evolving needs of its members and the wider community. From beginner classes to advanced training programs, the club strives to provide opportunities for growth, skill development, and social interaction. New members are always welcome and can participate in two free trial lessons.
