Paris – and now Madrid – are anxiously awaiting updates on Kylian Mbappé’s recovery from a posterior cruciate ligament injury. After 89 days of discomfort, the French superstar has turned to a name synonymous with successful recoveries in the world of football: Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet, known by many as the ‘Doctor Miracle.’ The renowned orthopedic surgeon’s expertise has been sought by a who’s who of the sport, including Neymar, Zlatan Ibrahimović, Kun Agüero, Ansu Fati, Mouctar Diakhaby, Nabil Fekir, and Karim Benzema.
Mbappé’s decision to consult with Sonnery-Cottet came in agreement with Real Madrid’s head doctor, Niko Mihic, signaling the club’s commitment to exploring every avenue for a swift and complete recovery for their star signing. The diagnosis, already delivered by Madrid’s medical staff, is now being reinforced by the opinion of one of the world’s foremost authorities on knee ligament injuries.
Sonnery-Cottet, born in Lyon in 1968, is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in knee ligament injuries. His reputation isn’t built on hype; it’s forged through an extraordinary number of complex procedures and successful recoveries. He serves as an advisor to the Centre Orthopédique Santy, a FIFA-accredited medical center of excellence, and has authored over 280 scientific publications in the medical field. His work focuses on the exclusive treatment of muscle and soft tissue injuries of the knee.
The connection between Sonnery-Cottet and Real Madrid dates back to 2014, when he treated Karim Benzema. That relationship has only strengthened over the years, culminating in his consultation with Mbappé. The surgeon’s modus operandi isn’t just about surgical skill; it’s about building a rapport with athletes, a key factor in the word-of-mouth recommendations that have made him so sought after. Zlatan Ibrahimović, for example, entrusted his knee to Sonnery-Cottet near the end of his career four years ago, a successful operation that led AC Milan to rely on him for Ismael Bennacer’s surgery and rehabilitation.
Sonnery-Cottet’s expertise extends beyond individual cases. He performs more than 600 anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and multi-ligament reconstructions annually, a testament to his consistent demand and proven results. He also currently works at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris, where he serves as head of orthopedic surgery.
The situation echoes advice given by former Real Madrid star Luis Figo, who recently cautioned against rushing back from injury. Figo, speaking to Betfair, emphasized the importance of listening to the player’s body and understanding the potential consequences of pushing too hard. “The injury of Mbappé is a question of really seeing what the player feels. If you can risk it or not and if that risk can bring worse consequences. Everything must be agreed with the medical team and with the coach, because each situation is different. In my case, on some occasions I forced it and it didn’t go so well. But I did it because I wanted to be on the field and help the team and my teammates. Sometimes you develop those sacrifices without knowing what might happen. And then it comes back to haunt you.”
That cautious approach – prioritizing a full recovery over a quick return – is the path being advocated by both Sonnery-Cottet and Real Madrid for Mbappé. The stakes are high, with the upcoming World Cup looming large on the horizon. Even as the immediate concern is Mbappé’s availability for Real Madrid’s upcoming Champions League tie against Manchester City, the long-term goal is to ensure he’s fit and ready to lead France in the tournament.
For now, the focus remains on careful evaluation and a measured rehabilitation plan. Mbappé and Real Madrid are hoping that the ‘Doctor Miracle’ can work his magic once again, allowing the superstar forward to return to the pitch stronger than ever.
