TORONTO – Former No. 1 overall NBA draft pick Markelle Fultz is getting another opportunity in the league, signing a 10-day contract with the Toronto Raptors, the team announced Monday. The move comes after Fultz showcased his skills with the Raptors 905, Toronto’s G League affiliate, in an attempt to re-establish himself in the NBA.
Fultz, now 27 years ancient, last appeared in the NBA during the 2024-25 season with the Sacramento Kings, playing in 21 games. He departed Orlando last summer after his contract with the Magic expired. Despite flashes of potential, particularly during the 2022-23 season, concerns surrounding his outside shooting, recurring injuries, and the development of younger guards in Orlando ultimately led to his departure.
For months, Fultz lacked a firm NBA offer, prompting him to join the Raptors 905 as a pathway back to the league. With the G League team, he demonstrated the qualities that initially made him a top prospect: playmaking ability, driving skills, and a strong physical presence on defense. While his statistics with the 905 weren’t dominant – averaging 9.8 points, 5.3 assists, and 2.5 rebounds in 6 games and 22 minutes per contest – they were enough to draw renewed interest from the Raptors.
The timing of this signing is particularly relevant for Toronto. With Immanuel Quickley sidelined due to plantar fasciitis, the Raptors are seeking to bolster their backcourt depth as they compete for playoff positioning in a crowded Eastern Conference. Fultz will be available for Monday night’s game against the Utah Jazz, and a debut is possible depending on the game situation and rotation.
This 10-day contract represents a critical juncture in Fultz’s career. Drafted first overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2017, his NBA journey has been marked by setbacks and unfulfilled expectations. Injuries have limited his playing time, appearing in fewer than 20 games in each of his first two seasons. He has since played for the Orlando Magic and Sacramento Kings, but has struggled to consistently replicate the offensive prowess he displayed during his lone season at the University of Washington.
However, Fultz has evolved into a capable defensive guard, and his ability to create opportunities for others remains a valuable asset. His best statistical season came in 2022-23 with the Magic, where he averaged 14.0 points and 5.7 assists while shooting 51.4% from the field.
The Raptors’ system, which values versatility and defensive intensity, could be a good fit for Fultz’s skillset. While his lack of a consistent three-point shot remains a concern – he possesses a mid-range game – his ability to attack the basket and make plays for teammates could provide a spark for Toronto.
If Fultz performs well and demonstrates the intensity the Raptors are looking for, the team may consider extending his contract beyond the initial 10 days. If not, he risks becoming one of the more notable examples of a draft bust, a player whose early promise never fully materialized.
The Raptors are currently battling for playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference, with several teams vying for the final spots. Adding a player with Fultz’s potential, even on a short-term basis, could provide a valuable boost as they navigate the remainder of the season.
