Margie [Last Name – if known, otherwise omit] – Obituary & Celebration of Life | Nanaimo, BC

The community of Nanaimo, British Columbia, is mourning the loss of Margaret (Margie) McGuire, who passed away on February 27, 2026, at the age of 91. A life marked by resilience, dedication to service, and a passion for sport, McGuire’s story reflects a journey from wartime Britain to a vibrant life in Canada.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, on June 20, 1934, Margie’s early years were shaped by the realities of World War II. Experiencing nightly air raids instilled in her a lifelong strength and determination, qualities that would define her throughout her life. In 1967, she immigrated to Canada with her young family, eventually settling in Nanaimo, British Columbia, in May of 1973 after a period in Alberta. This move marked the beginning of a decades-long commitment to the local community.

McGuire wasn’t simply a resident of Nanaimo; she was an active participant in its fabric. For over 40 years, she volunteered with the Ladies Auxiliary branch of the Royal Canadian Legion branch 257, taking on numerous leadership roles. Her dedication extended to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, where she was a valued member of the congregation. Beyond her community involvement, Margie was a passionate advocate for animal welfare, a lifelong lover of pets.

But Margie McGuire’s story extends beyond volunteerism and community service. She was a pioneer for working women, proudly establishing herself as a trained accountant. Her competitive spirit found an outlet in badminton, where she excelled as both a player and a provincial-level coach for many years. This dedication to sport speaks to a drive and discipline that permeated all aspects of her life.

Those who knew Margie will remember her not only for her accomplishments but also for her character. She was predeceased by her parents and both of her siblings, but is survived by her three daughters, Dawn (Craig), Carol (Tony), and Fiona (Matt), as well as four adored grandchildren: Hollie, Malcolm, Alex, and Jada. She is also remembered fondly by her former spouse, Alf. The family has expressed their gratitude to the staff at Kiwanis Lodge for the many years of excellent care they provided to Margie.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, May 3rd, 2026, at 12:30 PM at the Kin Hut (2730 Departure Bay Rd, Nanaimo, BC V9S3X1). This event will provide an opportunity for friends and family to gather and share memories of a remarkable woman.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the BC SPCA (https://spca.bc.ca/) in Margie’s name, a testament to her lifelong love of animals. This gesture allows her compassion to continue benefiting creatures in need, even after her passing.

Margie McGuire’s life serves as an inspiration – a story of resilience forged in challenging times, a commitment to community, and a passion for both personal achievement and selfless service. Her legacy will undoubtedly live on through her family, friends, and the countless lives she touched in Nanaimo, and beyond.

The celebration of life on May 3rd offers a chance to honor a woman who embodied strength, dedication, and a genuine love for life. For those wishing to express their condolences or share memories, the family welcomes messages of support during this demanding time.
