PETALING JAYA – Former world No. 1 men’s doubles player Marcus Gideon of Indonesia recently spent a day training with players at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM), providing a boost to the young athletes as he considers a potential return to competitive badminton. The 35-year-ancient, who officially retired in March 2024, is currently in Malaysia on a family holiday.
Gideon’s visit to ABM wasn’t solely recreational. He proactively reached out to Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky, requesting the opportunity to train alongside the academy’s players. Mainaky readily agreed, recognizing the value of Gideon’s experience, and skill. “Marcus is just here for a holiday with his family, but he is someone who loves to sweat it out,” Mainaky explained. “So Marcus asked if he could attend training at ABM, and of course I agreed. It’s likewise something that can benefit our players, especially the young ones.”
The Indonesian star’s presence offered a unique learning opportunity for the ABM players. Despite his recent retirement, Gideon demonstrated a high level of play, providing quality sparring sessions. Mainaky hopes the experience served as a valuable lesson for the younger generation, showcasing the dedication and skill required to compete at the highest level. “Marcus is 35, but he can still provide quality sparring sessions, and I hope the youngsters took it as a learning opportunity after seeing what he can still do on the court,” Mainaky added.
Gideon’s illustrious career, primarily alongside Kevin Sukamuljo, was marked by unparalleled dominance in men’s doubles. The pair held the world No. 1 ranking for an astonishing 260 consecutive weeks, from 2017 to 2022. This remarkable feat underscores their consistency and impact on the sport. Known affectionately as “the Minions” due to their relatively short stature and incredibly fast, agile playing style, Gideon and Sukamuljo revolutionized the men’s doubles game, pushing the boundaries of speed and athleticism. Badminton commentator Gillian Clark has noted that their style of play has elevated the excitement and intensity of matches.
While Gideon announced his retirement in March 2024, he has recently indicated a possible reconsideration of his decision. His training session at ABM could be a step towards a potential comeback, though no firm plans have been announced. The badminton world will be watching closely to see if one of the sport’s most dynamic duos will return to the court.
Marcus Gideon was born on March 9, 1991, in Jakarta, Indonesia. He currently plays for PB Jaya Raya and has been a member of the club since June 2018. Throughout his career, Gideon has achieved significant success on the international stage, including multiple Sudirman Cup and Thomas Cup titles with Indonesia, as well as a gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games in the men’s doubles event. He and Sukamuljo were also recognized as the BWF Best Male Players of the Year in both 2017 and 2018, a testament to their exceptional performance and impact on the sport.
The possibility of Gideon’s return adds an intriguing dynamic to the men’s doubles landscape. His partnership with Sukamuljo was one of the most successful in badminton history, and their absence has been felt by fans and competitors alike. Whether Gideon chooses to compete individually or reunite with Sukamuljo remains to be seen, but his recent training session at ABM suggests a continued passion for the sport and a potential desire to once again challenge for the top spot.
As of now, Gideon is enjoying time with his family in Malaysia. His wife, Agnes Amelinda Mulyadi, is also with him during the holiday. The next steps for Gideon remain uncertain, but his dedication to training and his recent engagement with young players at ABM indicate that his connection to badminton is far from over.
Fans eager to follow any potential developments in Gideon’s career can stay updated through official Badminton World Federation (BWF) channels and news from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
