Macerata Completes Ambitious Infrastructure Plan, Boosting Sports Facilities and Schools

Macerata, Italy – A comprehensive five-year infrastructure program spearheaded by the local administration has concluded, leaving a significant mark on the city’s sporting facilities, schools, and overall urban landscape. The initiative, focused on modernization, renovation, and new construction, aimed to enhance road safety, revitalize the city’s building stock, create state-of-the-art schools, promote widespread sports participation, and strengthen the role of sport as a catalyst for social inclusion, well-being, and community growth.

Strategic Planning and Resource Acquisition

Mayor Sandro Parcaroli emphasized the administration’s success in securing national and European funding through diligent planning and project development. “Over these five years, the municipal administration has undertaken extensive planning and design work, enabling us to tap into important national and European resources,” Parcaroli stated. “Thanks to this project development capacity, we have been able to initiate, implement, and, in many cases, complete works fundamental to the development of Macerata.” Key projects highlighted include the upcoming inauguration of the Via Roma underpass, alongside ongoing urban regeneration, school construction, and sports infrastructure improvements. This work, he added, lays the foundation for future development and opportunities.

Revitalizing Sports Infrastructure Across Macerata

The infrastructure plan prioritized both large-scale civic sports facilities and neighborhood-level amenities, aiming to deliver modern, accessible, and functional spaces for recreational, scholastic, and competitive activities. A substantial portion of the investment was directed towards the regeneration and construction of numerous facilities, including:

• Renovation of the San Giuliano della Pace sports field.
• Renovation of the Collevario skating track.
• Regeneration of the Stadio della Vittoria, with the addition of a public fitness trail.
• Renovation of basketball courts in Corneto and Largo Pascoli.
• Renovation of the Villa Potenza five-a-side football pitch.
• Construction of a new five-a-side football pitch in Piediripa.
• Renovation of the Dolores Prato school gymnasium.
• Renovation of the tennis courts on Via Velini.
• Renovation of the Fontescodella Palasport.
• Renovation of the “Tonino Seri” sports field in Collevario.
• Renovation of the Baseball stadium.
• Construction of a new gymnasium for the IV Novembre school, complete with a new basketball court.
• Construction of a new municipal swimming pool, a strategic asset for sports and leisure activities.
• Construction of a new martial arts gymnasium.

Beyond completed projects, several ongoing construction sites promise to further enhance Macerata’s sporting offerings. These include the regeneration of the Helvia Recina – Pino Brizi Stadium, with upgrades to the football and athletics facilities; the construction of a new rugby stadium, catering to the growing popularity of the sport; the development of new sports facilities in Fontescodella, including a fitness center and padel courts; a new contract for the completion and enhancement of the Via Velini tennis courts, funded through the Sport e Periferie program; and the regeneration of the Via Cioci playing field. These efforts collectively aim to strengthen the network of sports facilities, distributing opportunities for physical activity across different neighborhoods and improving the quality of structures available to sports clubs, schools, and citizens.

Leveraging National and European Funding

The Parcaroli administration successfully secured significant national and European funding through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and the National Complementary Plan (PNC) – earthquake, crucial instruments for supporting strategic interventions in urban regeneration, mobility, and the enhancement of school buildings. Funding from the PNC earthquake program facilitated substantial improvements to the urban fabric and infrastructure.

Completed projects funded through these programs include the Via Roma underpass (€8,436,496.39), a key infrastructure project improving traffic flow and urban safety, and the MurAperte – Giardini Diaz and Terrazza dei Popoli project (€494,442.74), an urban regeneration initiative focused on enhancing public spaces through artistic installations and renovations. The consolidation of the Fosso Valteia bridge and the requalification of the Sforzacosta fraction were also completed.

Through PNRR funds, significant investments were initiated in the education sector, with the goal of creating modern, safe, and sustainable school structures. Ongoing projects include the Corneto early childhood center, the Vergini early childhood center, the new Vergini primary school, and the requalification of the Piediripa agro-food center. Planning is also underway for the restoration of the National College, the new Mameli school, the De Amicis school, and the Ercole Rosa kindergarten. The new 0-11 year hub in Sforzacosta, developed in collaboration with the Andrea Bocelli Foundation, has already been completed.

Road Infrastructure Improvements

Numerous road construction projects were completed during the mandate, including improvements to Via Carducci, Via Velini (first section), Via Arno (road and sidewalks), Via Nuzi and part of Via Robusti, Via Gasparri and sidewalk, Via Murri (sidewalks), Via Croce and Fonte Quercia (sidewalks), Piazzale Nazario Sauro, the Palasport parking area, paving of Via XX Settembre and Via Gramsci, Viale Sferisterio, Viale Trieste (sidewalks), Via Mattei (Oasi roundabout), Via Mattei (Tucci roundabout), Via Verga, Via Spalato, Via Pace (Potentina), C.da Pace, Via Tucci, Via Santa Maria della Porta, Via Bramante, and repairs to a landslide along Via Mattei.

“These have been years of intense work in which the political guidelines, consistent with the government program voted for by the citizens of Macerata, have found full implementation by the technical services of the Municipality,” added Councilor Andrea Marchiori. “The school building plan, the city infrastructure, the urban regeneration interventions, the renovation of sports facilities, and the disaster prevention plan have represented some of the major challenges that this administration has faced and carried out with determination. It’s not just about completed works; we have also built a solid and planned program, with works already designed and funded that can be implemented in the next five years of city government.”
