PSG Stumbles at Home Against Monaco, Enrique Acknowledges Struggles Ahead of Chelsea Clash
PARIS – Paris Saint-Germain suffered a setback in their Ligue 1 title defense, falling 3-1 to a sharp Monaco side at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday. The defeat, PSG’s fourth in Ligue 1 this season and fourth in all competitions in 2026, leaves the door open for Lens to close the gap at the top of the table and raises concerns ahead of a crucial Champions League tie against Chelsea.
Maghnes Akliouche and Aleksandr Golovin put Monaco firmly in control, with Folarin Balogun adding a third after Bradley Barcola had briefly reduced the deficit for the Parisians. The result intensifies scrutiny on Luis Enrique’s side as they prepare to host Chelsea in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 matchup next week.
Imprecision and Uncharacteristic Errors Plague PSG Performance
Following the match, Luis Enrique addressed the media, acknowledging his team’s struggles. He pinpointed a lack of precision and uncharacteristic errors as key factors in the defeat. “We were particularly inaccurate in several parts of the match,” Enrique stated. “We saw some unusual errors. When you do that against a team with excellent momentum, you pay for it. Particularly the first goal we conceded, we gave a gift.”
The PSG manager emphasized the contrast between training and competitive environments. “It’s different between competition and training,” he explained. “But what I would like to say is that I don’t want to lose confidence in this team, and less in this moment, because it’s easy.” He noted the team’s resilience in continuing to push for a result, even after conceding, but acknowledged the timing of Monaco’s late goal effectively sealed the outcome.
Mental Fortitude Questioned as Champions League Looms
When pressed on whether the team’s difficulties were primarily mental, Enrique conceded that mental strength was a significant concern. “Clearly, when there are problems, the head is the first thing to disconnect,” he said. “It’s habitual. We have lost many matches during my career, and during the career of all the players. It’s a bizarre sensation, and it’s a bad sensation, clearly.”
Enrique cautioned against searching for a single explanation for the defeat, describing it as “multifactorial.” He stressed the importance of building confidence day by day, through training and matches, acknowledging that the team is currently facing a challenging period. “Trust is not something you buy at Monoprix,” he remarked, highlighting the need for consistent effort to regain belief.
Chelsea Match Remains the Focus, For Now
Despite the disappointing result against Monaco, Enrique remained guarded when asked about the implications for the upcoming Champions League clash with Chelsea. When asked if he was worried about the Chelsea match, he responded, “I know that I speak very badly French, but what I said is what I said. Nothing more.” He deflected further questions about tactical adjustments for the Chelsea game, stating, “I think it’s time to talk about Monaco. There are no conclusions, there are no solutions to talk about. I shouldn’t talk about the Champions League match. We will talk about it extensively: two days, the day before the match and the day of the match. That will be enough.”
Dembélé’s Absence and Defensive Concerns
Enrique was also questioned about the potential impact of Ousmane Dembélé’s recent absence on the team’s performance. However, he declined to comment on the matter, stating simply, “No, I have nothing to say on this subject.”
Defensively, PSG has conceded ten goals in their last six matches, raising concerns about their vulnerability. Enrique acknowledged this trend, stating, “Let me remind you that the first goal was a gift, a very beautiful gift unusual in professional football. We accept that. The second, I don’t remember… and the third was a goal that hit Pacho.” He maintained that PSG is typically one of the best defensive teams in the league and in the Champions League, but conceded that their recent form has been below par.
Looking Ahead: Regaining Mental Strength and Defensive Stability
Enrique emphasized the need to regain the team’s mental strength and defensive stability. “We are clearly in difficulty,” he admitted. “But we must have hope of changing that, and that’s what I think about for the next matches.” He expressed optimism that the team could identify another level for the Champions League, but stressed the importance of accepting mistakes and working to correct them.
The defeat to Monaco serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing PSG as they navigate a demanding schedule. With the Champions League looming large, Enrique and his team will need to address their recent struggles quickly to avoid further setbacks. The Parisians will need to rediscover their form and confidence if they hope to make a deep run in Europe’s premier club competition.
PSG’s next confirmed fixture is the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie against Chelsea at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday, March 11th.
