A mix of relegation anxiety, anticipation, and even melancholy defines the mood among amateur football clubs in the region as a pivotal matchday approaches.
The situation is particularly acute for FC Esslingen, who haven’t had the start to the season they envisioned. Instead of building momentum for league survival, the team has suffered three consecutive defeats. Considering results stretching back to the end of last season, they’ve lost four matches overall and find themselves deep in the relegation zone – 15th place, and third from bottom. On Sunday at 2:00 PM local time (12:00 UTC), they face a critical contest against seventh-placed SV Fellbach at Sportpark Weil. “It’s an extremely key game for us,” said FCE coach Dominik Eitel. “It’s about getting our playing style onto the field collectively and gaining control, as well as addressing our weaknesses. We need to concede fewer goals than the 2-4 loss against TSV Weilimdorf – six shots on goal, four goals conceded.”
Elsewhere in the league, TSV Köngen and FV Neuhausen are similarly still searching for their first win of the year, though both teams have only played one match so far. League leaders Köngen aim to rebound from a unhurried start with a home game against 13th-placed SC Geislingen on Sunday at 3:00 PM local time (1:00 UTC), even as Neuhausen travels to face fourth-placed TSGV Waldstetten at the same time.
Three games carry different weightings this weekend. Second-to-last TSV Berkheim will gaze to build on a recent morale-boosting victory against seventh-placed FV Vorwärts Faurndau when they play on Sunday at 3:00 PM local time (1:00 UTC). Twelfth-placed FV Plochingen faces a tough challenge away to league leaders 1. FC Heiningen at 3:30 PM local time (1:30 UTC). All eyes will also be on the local derby at 3:30 PM local time (1:30 UTC) between promoted sides TSV Denkendorf and TSV RSK Esslingen. Denkendorf’s co-coach, Georgios Natsis, summed up the anticipation: “We know each other well, there’s healthy competition, and the games have always been closely contested, intense, and of high quality – we’re really looking forward to it.” He added that points would be valuable for his team, but expressed respect for TSV RSK and their coach, Marko Kovacic.
Kreisliga A
The KLA also features several intriguing matches. Pascal Rückle, coach of tenth-placed TB Ruit, expressed a sense of melancholy ahead of his team’s game against twelfth-placed TSV Notzingen on Sunday at 3:30 PM local time (1:30 UTC). He said, “A favorite is relative in this league.” Rückle is traveling with anticipation and respect for Notzingen’s attacking qualities, but also with a touch of nostalgia. Nearly two years ago, Ruit secured promotion to the KLA with a dramatic 5-2 victory after being 0-2 down in Notzingen – and they are returning to the same venue for the first time since.
ASV Aichwald’s coach, Jan Singer, approaches his team’s game against ninth-placed TV Hochdorf on Sunday at 3:00 PM local time (1:00 UTC) with a different perspective – not dwelling on past encounters, but on the challenge of overcoming the favorites tag. Singer believes Hochdorf is one of the strongest home teams in the league, noting they haven’t lost at home since early September. He anticipates a difficult match, stating, “The pitch won’t be like Wembley, so we might not be able to play our usual football. The battle will decide it.”
TSV Deizisau’s team manager, Thomas Stiehl, expects a similarly combative game when his team travels to face TSG Esslingen on Sunday at 3:30 PM local time (1:30 UTC). The league is tightly contested, with TSG starting the year in second place but dropping to seventh after two losses, while Deizisau climbed from eighth to third with two wins. “TSG is under pressure, we have six points in hand. TSG needs to win to stay in contention, we need to win to stay near the top,” Stiehl explained. Esslingen’s press officer, Dominic Hornisch, acknowledged their underdog status, stating, “We’re going into the game as clear outsiders, but we still want to show a different face than in the past two weeks and demonstrate that we shouldn’t be completely written off.” He added that Deizisau is “a team with a lot of potential that they now seem to be realizing.”
TV Nellingen will also be aiming for a win when they travel to face recently dethroned league leaders TSV Wernau on Sunday at 3:00 PM local time (1:00 UTC). A victory would witness TV Nellingen overtake their opponents. “We want all three points. We’re still unbeaten this year, but we’ve only earned two points,” explained Nellingen player Felix Gentner. “We want to show that we have the best defense in the league, but of course, it will be difficult. Like every game.”
Kreisliga B
In the KLB, attention is focused not only on the top of the table but also on eighth place, which determines the relegation playoff spot and access to the new Kreisliga C. “TSG Esslingen II is in that position, which makes it dangerous,” said TSV Deizisau II’s team manager, Stiehl, ahead of their game against TSG on Sunday at 1:00 PM local time (11:00 UTC). SG Eintracht Sirnau II and SGM Mettingen/Westcity, both currently in Kreisliga C positions, will also face off on Sunday at 1:00 PM local time (11:00 UTC). Sirnau’s coach, Patrick Funk, explained, “With a win, we want to get back into contention for avoiding relegation.”
Games of the Week: TSV Köngen – SC Geislingen (Sunday, 3:00 PM local time/1:00 UTC), TSV Denkendorf – TSV RSK Esslingen (Sunday, 3:30 PM local time/1:30 UTC).
The upcoming matches promise drama and crucial points as teams battle for position and survival in the competitive German amateur football landscape. Keep up with the latest results and standings on the official league websites.
