Latvijas biatlonistes Volfa un Bendika nopelna punktus Pasaules kausa posmā Igaunijā

Otepää, Estonia – Latvian biathlete Estere Volfa delivered a strong performance on Saturday, finishing 13th in the 10-kilometer pursuit race at the Biathlon World Cup in Otepää, Estonia. Teammate Baiba Bendika also secured valuable World Cup points, finishing 39th. The result marks a significant achievement for both athletes as the World Cup season continues.

Italy’s Lisa Vitoci claimed the gold medal, starting from second position and ultimately finishing 26.2 seconds ahead of Finland’s Suvi Minkkinen. France’s Lou Jeanmonnot completed the podium, trailing Vitoci by 26.9 seconds. The race showcased a high level of competition, with several athletes vying for the top spots.

Volfa demonstrated impressive accuracy on the shooting range, incurring only one penalty loop throughout the four shooting stages. Bendika, however, faced a more challenging day, completing five penalty loops. Vitoci had two misses, while Minkkinen and Jeanmonnot each had one.

Following the race, Volfa shared her satisfaction with the result, acknowledging that she wasn’t feeling her best physically. “I felt it was a exceptionally good result, considering how I’ve been feeling health-wise,” Volfa told Latvian Television. She explained her patience during the final shooting stage, recognizing the importance of waiting for a lull in the wind to avoid incurring another penalty loop. Volfa also acknowledged that the sprint finish isn’t her strongest suit, making it tricky to compete with the top contenders in that phase of the race.

Volfa’s coach, Ilmārs Bricis, echoed her sentiments, emphasizing that despite not being at 100% health, Volfa executed her tactics effectively and achieved a commendable result. “She wasn’t fully healthy, but she got the tactics right and achieved a very good result,” Bricis stated.

Bendika expressed gratitude for the support from the spectators, noting the challenging nature of the course and the fatigue she felt during the race. “Thank you to the fans for their support on this incredibly tough track, where you can really sense the fatigue building,” Bendika said. She was pleased with her technical execution but acknowledged a demand for greater precision in her shooting.

Prior to the pursuit race, Volfa had a strong showing in the sprint distance, finishing nine minutes and eight seconds behind France’s Julia Simon. Bendika started the sprint two minutes and 22 seconds behind Simon, competing against a field of 58 athletes.

The race unfolded with Volfa demonstrating composure in the first prone shooting stage, hitting all targets and moving into 13th position. Bendika, while faster, incurred a penalty loop after one miss, dropping to 51st place.

In the second shooting stage, Volfa encountered a single miss, resulting in a penalty loop and a drop to 17th position. Bendika, however, rebounded with a clean shooting performance, climbing to 44th place.

Volfa maintained her tactical approach in the third shooting stage, successfully hitting all targets and holding 14th position. Bendika faced two misses in the standing stage, incurring additional penalty loops and falling to 45th place.

The final shooting stage proved decisive. Volfa, demonstrating patience in the windy conditions, carefully timed her shots and hit all targets, moving into 12th position before the finish. Bendika struggled, incurring two penalty loops and finishing 44th.

Volfa finished one minute, and 36.2 seconds behind the winner, Lisa Vitoci.

In the overall World Cup standings, Volfa currently holds 48th place with 93 points, making her the highest-ranked Latvian biathlete this season. Bendika is 58th with 72 points.

Volfa’s mother, Ieva Cederštrema-Volfa, expressed her joy at her daughter’s performance, noting the strong support from the fans. She also voiced concerns about Estere’s health amidst the prevalence of viruses. “There were a lot of supporters for Estere on the track. Her performance this season has been fantastic, and my only concern is her health with all the viruses going around,” Cederštrema-Volfa said to Latvian Television.

Earlier on Saturday, Latvian junior Rihards Lozbers achieved a notable result in the men’s pursuit race, finishing 31st and earning his first World Cup points. Lozbers’ performance marked a promising debut for the young athlete.

The Biathlon World Cup season’s eighth stage will conclude on Sunday with the mixed relay and 1+1 pair relay. Following the competitions in Otepää, the final World Cup stage will seize place in Holmenkollen, Norway, on March 19th.

The strong showing from both Volfa and Bendika highlights the growing strength of Latvian biathlon. Fans can seem forward to continued competition as the season progresses, with the potential for further success from these talented athletes.
