Arber, Germany – The Latvian mixed relay team delivered a stunning performance at the World Youth and Junior Biathlon Championships in Germany on Monday, securing gold in the junior event. In a dramatic race, the Latvian quartet bested biathlon powerhouses Norway and France, marking a historic moment for Latvian biathlon.

The Latvian team consisted of Matīss Meirāns, Rihards Lozbers, Elza Bleidele and Estere Volfa. They completed the 4 x 6 kilometer distance in a time of 1 hour, 17 minutes, and 55.2 seconds. Despite using 15 spare rounds in the shooting range, the team avoided penalty loops, a crucial factor in their victory.

Latvia finished 4.5 seconds ahead of the Norwegian team, while France placed third, 58.7 seconds behind the Latvian squad. This victory underscores the growing strength of Latvian biathlon on the international stage.

The race saw a strong start from Matīss Meirāns, who moved the team up from 22nd position to within the top ten after the first leg. Rihards Lozbers, Elza Bleidele, and Estere Volfa then built on that momentum to secure the gold medal. Lozbers’ “Golden Week” Continues

This marks the second gold medal of the championships for Rihards Lozbers, solidifying what’s quickly becoming a “golden week” for the talented biathlete. Just on Saturday, Lozbers claimed the world championship title in the youth 12.5-kilometer individual race. In that competition, Lozbers demonstrated exceptional speed, outpacing his closest competitors in the skiing portion by nearly two minutes, securing victory even with some shooting errors. Bleidele faced difficulties in her shooting, needing to use four spare rounds on her first attempt, but managed to climb back to second place, just 4.3 seconds behind Norway.

The final leg proved to be the most dramatic. Volfa encountered three shooting errors, but her superior speed on the course allowed her to overtake the Norwegian competitor, who also had a shooting error, and clinch the championship title. The Norwegian team used only eight spare rounds while the French team, who were leading after the second-to-last shooting stage, used ten.

A total of 23 teams started the race, but only 18 finished, with the remaining teams being lapped. This highlights the demanding nature of the course and the high level of competition.

Youth Team Finishes 16th

Latvia also fielded a team in the youth (U18) mixed relay. Ernests Solovjovs, Rūdolfs Raudziņš, Laura Alziņa, and Martīne Djatkoviča finished in 16th place.
